Durham University Orienteering Club
Quite simply THE best University Orienteering club in Britain.
Our taster session this year will be on Sunday 3rd October meeting outside the Calman Learning Centre (https://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=54.76752&mlon=-1.57229 =19/54.76752/-1.57229) at 14:30.
From here, we will then walk to the start at the roundabout at Upper Mountjoy (https://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=54.76477&mlon=-1.57031 =17/54.76477/-1.57031). If you are running slightly late you can meet us at the roundabout.
This session will be very beginner friendly and will start off with a brief introductory guide to the sport for any newcomers. More experienced runners are welcome too and can just pick up a map and go out.
What do I need?
It’s best to wear something suitable to run in (although you can go round at whatever speed you want). Bring a compass if you have your own but this is not a necessity as we have a supply which we can lend out. Also, as it has been a bit wet recently so expect the ground to be slightly wet/muddy underfoot.
Hope to see as many of you there as possible and we look forward to it.

Edinburgh Big Weekend !
Edinburgh Big Weekend is one of the highlights of the orienteering year. This year, DUOC members took part in a dark and windy night event on Friday on steep Calton Hill, then a brilliant urban event on Saturday on the streets of the south of Edinburgh and later that evening there was a meal followed by a ceilidh. On Sunday, the main event saw DUOC members take on the classic Arthur’s seat. Unfortunately, the team was depleted by illness, injuries, and imminent summative deadlines and the Scottish rain arrived with force at 11 causing some unfortunate retirements. However, notable results came from Thomas (17th on Brown) with Luke and Oisin close behind in 20th and 22nd respectively. Callum (97th on Blue) with Molly (84th on Green) also had commendable Arthur’s Seat debuts. Finally, Sunday saw the result of the weekend from Ben who in only his third event came 12th on Blue only 13 minutes behind the winner!
All in all, it was a fab weekend which has kickstarted our packed rest of year: the English University champs, BUCS, JK, and many socials await!!
Here are some of the best shots from the weekend!
DUOC's Xmas dinner was a great success! Can't wait for the next social!!
A couple of weeks ago on Sunday, some of the club went down to Hexham to compete in an event. Unfortunately, it was only the slow and boozy half of the squad that were left for the photo!
Fun times last night at the "Andrew Stemp" bar crawl🍺 🍺
We will be holding a taster session on Sunday at 2.30pm. We'll be meeting outside the Calman Learning Centre. Come along and give it a try. If you can't make it, don't worry, just come along to another training on a Wednesday afternoon. See our website and this page for further details.

One of the biggest events in our calendar, to start the year off right; and DUOC did represent in force!!
Last night there was a traditional ceremony; and DUOC did dance!!
The higher powers of snow and ice did judge us worthy of a challenge greater than classic orienteering; and DUOC did persevere!!!
Expect a full photo album and enormous run report about our weekend in Edinburgh when we've returned home and defrosted!!

10 Reasons Why Orienteering is the Best Sport Ever
'Nough said.
windsweptwriting.com I would be the first to admit orienteering can look like a crazy sport. But there's no other sport that tests the mind and the body in quite the same way.
Don't forget to join in on the taster session this afternoon! Meet outside the Calman Learning Centre at 1pm to learn the basics and try out the sport for yourself with a map and compass. Hope to see you there!
We're ready to go at the Experience Durham fresher's fair! See you soon!
Congratulations to everyone who received their results today and for getting into the university whose orienteering club came 4th in BUCS this year! We look forward to seeing you at the Experience Durham fair!
