Charities rely upon volunteer trustees and during national volunteers week we would like to extend our thanks to the kind people who volunteer their time and expertise on our board of trustees.

If you have a professional background, some spare time and a particular interest in perinatal mental illness and are looking to volunteer as a trustee please drop us an email and we'll get back in touch with you

To find out more about volunteering with Light please email [email protected]

we need volunteers who understand the emotional impact of being a parent, who would be willing to share their experience with someone who is struggling at the moment and show that 'you will not always feel like this'
Our peer to peer support groups run on Tuesday morning at Bentley Family Hub and Friday morning at Rossington Family Hub.
Volunteering with Light gives you a chance to help other, we pay travel expences and offer regular training sessions on mental health and other relevent topics, it also is a great way to get into work and fill any employment gaps.

If I gave you this, what random act of kindness would you pass on to someone else?

The reason why I am gifting this is because I spend my whole day helping parents to sleep training their babies and children and realise what a huge difference it makes to their lives.

Comment below and I will pick the winner by the 28th February x

If you watch โ€œThis Is Going to Hurtโ€ on BBC One please be aware of scenes with incorrect advice about baby movement in the final episodes.

The sheer number of people weโ€™ve heard from about this is at least a little encouraging, it's clear that people are becoming increasingly aware that misinformation on popular TV shows has potentially dangerous consequences.

We wonโ€™t go into detail about whatโ€™s contained in the episodes to not further contribute to the misinformation but, instead, weโ€™ll remind you of this:

A babyโ€™s movements are a sign of their wellbeing. If someone tells you their baby has stopped moving, or movement has reduced or changed, please tell them to call their Maternity Unit without delay. If you notice your baby isnโ€™t moving as much, or something seems wrong, trust your instincts. Your Maternity Unit team are there for you 24/7 and they want to support you.

Using a home doppler is actively discouraged by medical professionals and organisations due to the potential risk they pose. Your baby having a heartbeat doesnโ€™t necessarily mean theyโ€™re well and reassurance given by them can be false. Itโ€™s vital that both of your health is checked by a medical professional as soon as possible if your babyโ€™s movements worry you.

Weโ€™re contacting the BBC with our concerns and urge others to do the same.

For up-to-date information on your babyโ€™s movements, including why you shouldnโ€™t use a home doppler, please visit: www.kickscount.org.uk

Getting access to the right treatment is part of a lot (not all) of people's journeys. There are two therapies which are recommended for post natal PTSD, trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR).

Psychotherapies help people process their memories in a way that they move to long term memory so are less easily triggered and cause less distress. CBT and EMDR do this in different ways but both therapies are effective in helping people recover from the effects of trauma.

CBT is a structured therapy where you go over the traumatic events, look at your perceptions and thought processes, and use relaxation techniques to try to create a safe environment in which you can consider and process particularly difficult or traumatic aspects of your birth. It usually involves six to 10 sessions of up to an hour over the course of two or three months.

EMDR involves thinking about the trauma while following a moving object, such as a finger, with your eye. Alternatively, you can listen to taps and tones through headphones, played alternately in each ear, whilst thinking about the trauma. The treatment follows a set structure, and a typical course consists of six to 10 one-hour sessions.

Please take a look at our website if you would like more information about accessing therapy for birth trauma. ๐Ÿ’™

Remember that you should always be allowed a partner with you during labour, even if you are COVID positive.

If your support person tests positive, NHS England guidance says "The woman can select an alternative
support person who has not tested positive for COVID-19."

No-one should be expected to labour without support. See our webpage https://www.aims.org.uk/information/item/coronavirus for more information.
