Berryworks Console Mods
Home-based work in console modification, repairs and Pi system building/configuration. Ever seeking
A couple of in-progress test photos of the RetroSix install I did earlier this week.
I had the soldering iron out for less than a minute once heated, this really is a great kit! Hopefully I’ll get to use more of them in the near future.
Another job from this week. A Ps vita with some strange but easy to fix Henkaku issues.
- re-initialised exploits
- updated storage Micro SD to 512GB
- transferred owners data across for a seamless transition
- repaired retroarch installation
All good stuff, and now ready to go home ^_^
I absolutely LOVE this kit from RetroSix - the clean screen GBA SP is a dream to install and VERY reasonably priced. It’s a drop-in install with optional solder connections, and I definitely chose to do that for this customer.
A fresh shell and new button membranes really make this build pop! I added an expanded battery to really extend those gaming sessions. Enjoy some before and after photos.
Had great fun restoring this absolute GEM to working order. When it came to me it had corrosion issues, stemming from a leaking battery which had clearly been left in situ for a few years.
Cleanup seemed to hold no reward until I checked on it earlier today and it was working!
I doubled back and re-connected the speaker and now it's fully restored! A bit of cleaning to go, but for now…
AGUMON SHINKAAAAA!!!
Happy New Year folks! 2023 was a strange one, and got pretty quiet, but I hope to be around more in 2024!
I had the pleasure of working with my wife over at Craft Cottage on this gift for a dear friend. Sometimes fixes don't work out, and its a shame to see a piece of my childhood go to waste, so we mounted it up with a vinyl label to boot.
By golly it has been a while!
Helped a friend out with this one, a little light bleed at the top because of the manual trimming, but otherwise a beautiful reshell to really hit the nostalgia bones on the recipient.
Merry Christmas folks! Here’s to more modding/restoration in 2024 as well :)
Finally got around to setting this up and configuring it. Very happy!
ODroid Go Super, running TheRA by TechToy Tinker - fantastic software with an easy install and tonnes of the work done before even laying hands on, thanks!
A couple of my favourites running on it for now, and jam packed with JRPG goodness.
Upcoming jobs include:
XBox Series S controller repair
DS Lite reshell and Wi-Fi antenna replacement
Stay tuned!
Happy new year! Quiet on the front here due to family and social commitments over the festive period. First up in 2023 is finishing this AWESOME Gameboy Colour build for a friend, using parts listed below.
Had loads of fun with this one! A slight separation of screen lens from the LCD but hardly noticeable when switched on. I'm not happy with that but my friend is, so it stays :)
Parts:
Case/Shell - ExtremeRate.com
Buttons/Membranes - Lab Fifteen co
Screen/Lens - Funnyplaying
Yeah!! A Gameboy Color in pearlescent blue/purple shell.
Still missing buttons due to the postal strikes, so a fully finished picture to follow!
A little cleanup post-soldering, otherwise I'm happy here!
Any guesses? It's a real treat to work on this for a friend :)
Another PS3 stripped and cleaned. New thermal paste applied, and running like a dream again!
As usual, working with my wowstick makes things easier, and I don't recall having to charge it for quite a while now!
Open it up, tear it down, clean it up, and rebuild.
A little PS4 servicing here. Shame it seems to have a dead power supply though. This will either get a replacement supply, or be harvested for parts at a later time. On to the next one!
As usual, if removing the plates or heatsinks on your devices, make sure to thoroughly clean off the old thermal paste and use a suitable replacement. This one had a little more cleaning after the photo.
Gotta make sure we're equipped for those cleaning jobs. Fresh thermal paste is a MUST when you're disturbing the old stuff, otherwise you don't get a proper seal for thermal conductivity.
As one project finishes, the next load arrive! Time to get cleaning/updating on these!
2x PS3 for full servicing
1x PS4 for full servicing
1x 2DS and New 3DSXL for updates/cleaning
2x PSTV (Not pictured) for updates
A fun load of work ahead!
A little time spent working on the Pi build last night, it's really coming along! Not much to show beyond the physical just yet, but there will be.
In the mean time, here's a little cleanup and battery change on a Pocket Pikachu toy from 1998! This has been in a friend's possession for at least the last 14 years, with the same dead battery in it.
Luckily enough, there was no leakage, damage, or anything beyond a lost screw for the battery cover. A quick clean with some IPA, and a replacement screw, and it's now as good as new. Also inserted a piece of card as a tab, so it'll be ready for use when he's ready.
More work on the Pi for a client last night. It takes a little time to get these little machines set up, loaded and configured but it's well worth the wait!
I love the RetroFlag cases too, this one is designed to look like a Nintendo SNES, one of my favourite consoles!
Had it working overnight to make sure there are no issues with heat dissipation and the fans. This is staying cool, running smoothly and will soon be ready to return!
With my tools in storage for the last few months, it's been quiet on this page. Back to work recently though and it's great! More on the Pi fix to come soon!
Just because I wasn't posting here though, doesn't mean my hands were idle. If you didn't know, im also a staff writer over at www.handheldgamingcommunity.com
If you haven't, you should check out my series of articles (currently on hiatus) called 'Survival Rations'!
This may seem like a simple shell swap, but if you look closer there are some clear differences.
The now-empty joycon shells are a cheap off-brand version and quickly let their owner down. A little elbow grease and they're now in eXtremeRate shells, which hold up a LOT better.
Cheaper shells still look okay but an alarming number of them fail as they are usually copies of a copy. This process introduces inconsistencies such as weak screw posts and tight fits which result in cracks and stress breaking.
Saving money is one thing, but don't forget that quality always has a price. Source quality parts from reputable merchants.
I love a good troubleshooting job.
Here we have a pi gaming unit, and android kit which, for some reason, have stopped booting. Time to have a look for obvious physical problems before checking the SD cards for software faults.
It's good to be back!
Apologies for the long absence folks! Those of you who know me personally have heard about the situation, which is now thankfully beginning to ease. I have access to all of my tools again, and am happy to be helping those who need it!
Get in touch for all of your Console/Device/Computer/Pi projects, whether hardware or software. I'll let you know what I can do, and get things running the way you want.
I have some work coming up shortly which will be posted here when ready!
Some work on a PSP from the other day, mainly cleaning and firmware installation with a larger memory card.
Forgot to take 'after' photos, but I am still amazed every time I work on a 1000 series PSP - Still kicking after nearly 20 years, and modern emulation handhelds STILL struggle to play some of the games!
I just can't get over this little speaker replacement! It's a perfect fit and match for the original, but cleaner and obviously without the quirks of age. FunnyPlaying hit the nail on the head with this as usual!
This was an AWESOME choice of colour scheme for a build. It looks clean, refreshed, and ready for another go round the gameplay circuit.
Overall this took a few hours with cleaning and replacing the battery contacts. The changes made were:
- Shell and button change - Black and white respectively
- FunnyPlaying speaker replacement - it's not louder but it's so clean!!
- Q5 IPS LCD screen install with touch sensor - left that plastic on for the owner to get the satisfying peel
A great package, and with the built-in touch control for the screen it's able to shift between 8 different brightness levels (photo shows level 5) as well as several pixel effects for total control over the experience.
Like, comment, share and please get in touch if you want something like this!!
"I love it when a plan comes together!"
Communication is key! Having those conversations with this customer meant I could have their console AND upgrade parts in hand within 24 hours of each other. Time to get to work!
Always buy quality parts, and I tend to use ZedLabz for that, as they've always had the parts I need at decent prices (not paid advertising) - plus I love these boxes! Great for shipping out finished consoles in.
Stay tuned for the final product tomorrow!
Well...this is one well-loved Gameboy Color! From 1998, this thing has seen 24 years of on-again off-again play, and is in dire need of an upgrade...or 4.
This is before any work, with any luck this little handheld will be looking crisp and clean over the next couple of days!
As we head into the summer holidays this year, I'd like to ask everyone following me a simple question.
What would you like to see on this page?
I plan to keep uploading photos and stories of each job that comes in, and possibly link some reviews that I write, but what else?
Any ideas/page shares/feedback are gratefully received!
Had an absolute blast the last couple of days - full cleaning, reset, update and set-up on this PSTV and two vita consoles! All are ready to go back to their owner now, here's hoping they're to your liking!
I Choose You!!!
This Gameboy Advance SP got the works. And I LOVE how it turned out. Here's hoping the owner does too!
- IPS screen upgrade/replacement
- Brightness controller soldered
- Reshell to evolve into Pikachu
- Full cleaning inside and out prior to postage
Tested throughout and working just as well as it did on release, enjoy it Connor!
Back to my roots today with a Gameboy Advance SP - Scratched and beaten in the old shell, but still kicking!
Can't wait to see how this turns out :D
Full joblist with tomorrow's photos. LOVE working on the Gameboy family :D
