Hello All! Hope you have had a good start to June! Took a little break from my page the past week while away on holiday. Back to Edinburgh now and trying to get on top of life admin etc. while also making some time for wellbeing on my flexi Monday off. Many of us may not be lucky enough to have a grassy green garden in the city, but today I google mapped the nearest green space to the supermarket where I was doing my grocery shopping and discovered a lovely new park where I did a bit of earthing in my feet (was thankful for no dog poo ๐Ÿ˜…). Then I sat on the grass in the sun with a calming tea for a while listening to the birds & wind in trees! Then got up, popped shoes back on & headed 1 minute walk away to supermarket & back about my busy day. This wee pause might be the highlight of what was only to be a practical chore day and it can be possible to conveniently fit in a bit of nature & self-care in even the busiest of lives. Research shows living near green spaces improves our wellbeing, we are very lucky to have many in Edinburgh, so let's make use of and take care of our local parks and wildlife! ๐Ÿ’š #nature #naturalgrounding #earthing #mentalwellbeing #ecotherapy #selfcare #NatureNurtures #GreenSpaces

Having spent some time back home in the countryside in Ireland recently, I have really enjoyed the sound of the birds whether outside earthing, swinging in our garden swing or listening to them from my bedroom window. I noticed some positive shifts in my mood and decided to investigate further. Various research, including that of Kings College London (IoPPN, 2022), has found that seeing or hearing birds is associated with an improvement in mental wellbeing. But why does bird song have such a positive impact on our wellbeing? One theory makes the connection between bird sounds and positive associations and memories (especially with spring and summer). People associate birdsong with feeling happy, relaxed and removed from everyday stresses and in this way, the sounds can be comforting. In terms of our associations with avian sounds, Environmental Researcher Radcliffe (2022) explains that โ€˜because most of us tend to associate being in nature with recreation and relaxation, we might re-experience those positive psychological states when we experience different aspects of nature, such as birdsong.โ€™ Since nature is the environment in which humans evolved, we potentially have an innate, genetic preference for sounds that make us think of nature. These sounds make us feel safe and at peace, because in our ancient history we associated them with places that had abundant resources. Another theory explaining why bird sound is reassuring may be linked to our reaction to birds singing when they feel safe. Radcliffe explains that birdsong might indicate a natural environment where predators are not around to threaten us, thus we are inclined to relax and feel better in pleasant, non-threatening natural settings that offer us resources that could help our survival. So, get opening your windows and doors to hear the birds, even better, get outside and tune into all the glorious sounds that are boosting your wellbeing. It's #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek and the theme this year is 'move more for mental health', how about trying moving more in nature for double the wellbeing benefits! Natural grounding or earthing is walking barefoot with the earth beneath your feet allowing your skin to touch natural surfaces like grass, soil or sand. This can provide you with various wellbeing benefits and grounding energy. I have loved getting a chance to walk in the cool, soft, green grass being back home in the Irish countryside while it has been warm and sunny, it has felt so freeing and comforting. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ’š The goal is to walk barefoot while paying close attention to the soles of your feet as they connect with the earthโ€™s surface. This can be done on the grass, soil or mud in a nearby park or forest, or on sand at the beach. Earthing is also a great tool for practicing mindfulness as it helps us to be present and tune into our natural surroundings and sensations in our bodies. Some research and experts have found that earthing can result in various health and wellbeing benefits such as reducing pain and inflammation, lowering stress, anxiety and depression, improving sleep, concentration and even our immune system. It is believed that our bodies build up positive static electric charges that canโ€™t be released unless we connect to the ground. Grounding neutralizes those positive charges by absorbing negative electrons to balance you out and improve body functioning. When connected, the electrons we absorb work as natural antioxidants that neutralize the positively charged free radicals that can damage your body (Fischer, WebMD, 2024). Natural grounding also connects us to the benefits of soil. Scientists have discovered that a common microscopic bacteria found naturally in soil can improve mental health (Schwartz, 2022). So ditch those shoes for a while and enjoy the sensory experience and wellbeing benefits! ๐Ÿ‘ฃ๐Ÿชท https://www.facebook.com/yourmentalwellbeingadviser #naturalgroun

Paging Doctor Googlers!! ;-) A top tip to remember if you are prone to googling your symptoms when feeling anxious about your health...Search Engines give you back what you put in! e.g.: if you search โ€˜headache + brain tumourโ€™ you mainly get back headache and brain tumour-related information. Thus you may be more likely to conclude (in the absence of other pertinent information) that your headache means you have a brain tumour. ...as opposed to searching โ€˜causes of headachesโ€™ more generally, which should return a variety of information & many explanations for the headache (other than a brain tumour). Remember, it may not be as bad as you think! And it is not helpful to diagnose off the internet! Nothing replaces a good Doctor's practical experience and knowledge! ๐Ÿชท #healthanxiety #anxiety #Anxietysupport #anxietyrelief #mentalwellbeing #selfhelp #cbttherapy #drgoogle #healthconcerns

A very simple statement and message today with a jazzy gif graphic! ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ”ฆ**'Your wellbeing is created by what you put your attention on!'** ๐Ÿ”Ž Sometimes we might put too much energy, thought and focus on things that may not be helpful for our wellbeing and maybe too little time on the things that could boost it. Are we dwelling too much on negative thoughts, situations and things outside our control? Are we giving our time and attention to people and activities that drain us or don't add to our lives? Are we neglecting some important things for our physical health and wellbeing e.g. prioritising sleep, time in nature? Or are we not doing enough of the things that bring us joy, comfort and peace? The things, passions and people that spark a light in us, that matter to us? Are we even living enough in the present moment and paying sufficient attention to this rather than dwelling in the past or worrying for the future? I encourage you to reflect on this simple statement when you can and where your spotlight is shining, thinking of any small, helpful changes you could make to your focus of attention that could improve your wellbeing and quality of life. ๐Ÿชท #wellbeing #focus #yourattention #mentalwellbeing #mindfulness #presentmoment #mindful

Hi, I'm Lyn from Your Mental Wellbeing ๐Ÿชท Iโ€™m a Psychological Therapist and Mental Health Adviser. One area I am passionate about for wellbeing is Ecotherapy. Time in nature has significant wellbeing benefits. It can reduce stress, anxiety and physical illnesses and improve our mood, immune system and sleep. More recent research is demonstrating that our brains cannot work optimally if we do not spend time in natural environments. Itโ€™s a necessity and whatโ€™s even better, it's free! ๐Ÿ’š #NatureNurtures #ecotherapy #nature #wellbeing #wellbeingwalks #walking

I can sometimes be a bit bah humbug about the Christmas period, it can be a difficult time as it is for many individuals/families for numerous understandable reasons. But this year, as an experiment, I have been consciously trying to shift my mindset to embrace the spirit and all the positive, magical things, the twinkly lights, the pretty snow, the cosy atmospheres, the festive music and warm feelings and sentiments, coorie-ing in but also getting out into the light, the crisp air and freshness and beauty of the Winter landscapes. Embracing all the light is bringing some joyful moments/experiences, gratitude and making it harder to be cynical. Even allowing myself to catch the festive enthusiasm of others is enhancing positive feelings. What do you like about Christmas? What are you grateful for about this time? Could you allow yourself to embrace it more? Would it help? โ„๏ธ #FestiveWellbeing #christmastime #mentalwellbeing #NatureNurtures
