A view from Regent Terrace of Waverley Station, the North Bridge and Edinburgh Castle c.1877. Railway buildings fill the foreground with tracks and lines of carriages or stock cars stretching away under the original North Bridge. The buildings of the Old Town can be seen on the left-hand side with Edinburgh Castle behind.
Edinburgh Waverley is the second-largest mainline railway station in the UK. There were originally three stations on the site, serving three separate railway companies including the Edinburgh, Perth and Dundee Railway whose trains ran through a tunnel underneath Princes Street and New Town to another Station at Scotland Street. In 1866 North British Railway absorbed the other two companies and proceeded to amalgamate the three existing stations. Construction of this single station, much of which remains, was completed in 1874.

Swanston Cottage remains almost unchanged since it was painted by Robert Hope in 1914.
The cottage was leased by Robert Louis Stevensonโs parents, during the summer months, for the period of Stevenson's late teens to twenties (1867 until 1880).
Such wonderful inspiration for a young writer.
