Top Tips on How to Manage Your Home Renovation Budget
Your home renovation project may well be one of the biggest investments of your life, so understanding costs and controlling risks is of the utmost importance. For successful and happy projects, expectations and available funds have to match. So, what should you consider when contemplating your project’s budget?
There are two key aspects to bear in mind:
1. Objectives
List the order of your project aims, and speak to your architect about how the capital build costs can be determined; this will give you an idea of your core budget. If it’s easier, gather your objectives into a spreadsheet, making it easier to understand their relevance and interactions with each other.
Remember the ‘tripartite’ diagram of cost-time quality. Of course, we all want to achieve high quality at a low cost in the least amount of time. However, it is generally recognised that the architecture and realisation of most building projects have to settle for two of these factors, and these two directly influence the third.
2. Controls
Obtaining as much information as possible is at the heart of controlling objectives and minimising risks. To manage your budget and obtain the maximum value, seek to understand the building process and where your money is going by commissioning appropriate documentation, including architects’ drawings, specifications, schedules and contracts.
Your budget will need to be split into three primary components: read on ........

Why are Building Regulations important?
Building Regulations are the equivalent of the rules requiring seat belts in cars, hard hats on-site, and not smoking in cafes. However, unlike these rules (which were all considered inconvenient when introduced but are now shock-inducing if ignored), some people still see Building Regulations as something to “get around”.
The Common Misconception
There is a lot of misconception surrounding building control and the involvement of building control officers in construction projects. This misconception appears to be perpetuated by hearsay and misinformation by poor-quality builders. The misconception is based on two ideas:
1. The involvement of building control will prevent you from achieving the design you would like
2. The involvement of building control will result in an escalation of construction costs
I hope that this article will redress this view and explain some practical facts about this topic.
Why are Building Regulations important? - Architect Your Home Building regulations are the standards for building across the UK. Our architects explain the legislation and help your project comply with the regulations.
