New regulations for septic tank discharges came into effect in England on October 2nd, 2023. Here's a quick rundown:

- Discharges to surface water are banned for new installations. This means if you're building a new septic system, it won't be allowed to drain directly into a river, stream, or lake.

- Sharing a discharge point with another septic tank is trickier. If you're planning a new system, it can't combine its discharge with an existing septic tank if the total volume overflows daily limits.

- New discharges can't be within 50 meters of existing discharges or certain
protected areas.
