Videos by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service in Exeter. Proud to help our communities to be safer by preventing and responding to fire and rescue emergencies
π¨ Join us this Saturday (14 September), in Langport for crucial water safety advice! π¨
We've recently installed three throwline boards along the River Parrett, a popular spot for water sports, dog walking, running, and wild swimming. These throwlines are here to help prevent accidents and ensure quick rescues if needed, as many people have been saved from getting into trouble in the water over the years.
Come along to Cocklemoor Green, from 11am-4pm, where members of our Somerton Fire Station crew will be demonstrating how this life-saving equipment works, along with representatives from the RNLI and Langport Life
Look forward to seeing you there! π§π¨βπ

Our all-terrain vehicle
Event tomorrow with Dartmoor National Park π₯ π
Ever wondered how we tackle wildfires on tricky terrain where our fire engines can't reach? We rely on our fleet of ATV vehicles, like the one in this video!
Join us tomorrow at Haytor (Dartmoor) from 10:30am at their Visitor Centre car park. Our firefighters will be on hand to showcase one of our ATV's and answer questions about wildfire prevention. It's a great educational opportunity for kids this summer holiday, with lots of photo opportunities!
After visiting us, why not make a day of it and explore Haytorβs old quarries or take a walk along the Granite Tramway. Bring a picnic!
π Location: Haytor Vale, TQ13 9XT
Everyone is welcome. See you there!

Spring has arrived in Devon and Somerset
πΈπ₯ It's officially spring, but it's not all about flowers blooming and birds chirping (although who isn't excited for that?!). π·π¦
It's also the perfect time to refresh our safety habits and ensure a happy season for everyone!
You could:
π» Set a reminder to test your smoke alarm(s) monthly, or even weekly. It takes seconds and saves lives.
π» Vacuum your smoke alarm when you spring clean. Dust particles and insects can get trapped in the grill, causing your alarm to go off.
π» Regularly check tyre pressure and oil levels of your vehicle(s).
π» Bin disposable BBQs and extinguish outdoor fires (like campfires) - especially during the warmer months, when wildfire risk is increased.
π» Park carefully to ensure our emergency services can get to incidents on time.
π» Charge your phone, laptop and other electricals on hard surfaces, not flammable surfaces such as beds or pillows. Devices can overheat and cause fires.
These are a few examples of how we can make a big difference. Visit our safety page on our website for more helpful information - link in the comments below.

β₯οΈ Whether you're into celebrating Valentine's Day or not, here are some love-filled safety tips from us to you β₯οΈ 1οΈβ£ Set the mood with battery-powered candles instead of an open flame. You can buy these in most well-known supermarkets. 2οΈβ£ If you're popping a cork, save the three-course meal for a sober chef β most fires happen in the kitchen. Also on this Valentine's Day, a big shoutout to the families who share their loved ones with us β€οΈπ #ValentinesSafety #SpreadLoveNotFires

β Wet weather is expected in parts of our region this weekend. Please be aware of flood water around you on the roads. The GOV UK website has a helpful postcode search tool, which can help you see where there is flooding and to plan your journeys. Please be aware that: π π² Vehicles can get stuck and even swept away in just 30cm of flowing water. π Vehicles can also stall when you drive through flood water. If this happens, leave your vehicle immediately and find safety on higher ground.
What is Holocaust Memorial Day?
Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, when we remember all those murdered during the Holocaust, Nazi persecution of other groups, and in more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Watch this short video to find out why we will remember them. Together we will challenge prejudice and hatred to create a better future.

Happy 2024
Here's to a fantastic and safe 2024 for everyone in Devon and Somerset! Wishing you, and our incredible colleagues and their families, a year filled with happiness and health.
Gavin Ellis reviews the last year for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue
The last year has been busy for our Service, mainly because of a lot of wet stuff falling from the sky!
Our Chief Fire Officer, Gavin Ellis, reviews the year, and says a big thank you to everyone who works very hard to keep people in our two counties safe.
Here's to a safe - and less damp - 2024! π
Strong winds expected
π¬οΈπ§οΈ Weβre expecting strong winds and heavy rain in the South West from tomorrow morning (Saturday), into Sunday. Gusts of up to 45-50 mph are likely, reaching 65-75 mph near the coast π¬οΈπ§οΈ
π Check road conditions ahead of driving β delays are expected (especially for high-sided vehicles).
π¦ If you lose power, opt for battery-operated lighting as a replacement as candles are a fire risk.
π If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves.
π₯Έ Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly.
Keep safe and check the Met Office website for updates.
