Happy New Year! Here’s a short monthly video update covering all events i am doing in January. Finishing with a quick toning of a mantra that came to me recently and which I weaved into a few sound baths in Dec Booking links for all the sound baths are at www.gilesmountain.com/events
I went to a great 5 rhythms workshop on Saturday in London So very long overdue as I hadn’t been dancing all day for ages. It made me remember and rekindle how much I love dancing as a somatic and spiritual practice and meditation. And how powerful the medicine is for being in conversation with one’s body and the connection to spirit. It also made me think about how many ways we can be in conversation to ourselves and others without actually talking. Hers just a few quick ideas that came to me. Through movement Touch and intimacy. Somatic inquiry. Listening to what your body is saying through sensations and feelings. Looking into someone’s eyes. The gateway to their soul Heart to heart hugs Meditation Making art Playing instruments. Singing toning and chanting. With the elements. Watching the flames dance and burn in a fire Walking barefoot in the earth Swimming in the sea Feeling the wind blowing a kiss on your face. Staring up at the vastness of the night sky. Stroking your cat Playing with a child Giving way to another car Cooking a family meal Washing the dishes. Smiling at a stranger. Giving up your seat on a busy tube. Everything feels like a conversation when it comes down to it and we strip away the connotations of talking. Please do drop into the comments if you gave any other ideas around non verbal ways you have experienced a conversation. And for the Reggae (Rocksteady in this case ) lovers the tune is called My Conversation by Slim Smith ( The Uniques). The rhythm has been one of the most ( if not the most ) sampled studio One riffs ever. The album Yamaha Skank- my conversation stylee , being one of the first and most notable examples. Big love x
Monthly Events update from the fireside! I thought it would be nice for a change to do my monthly video update from the living room with a fire as it’s the place we all land in after every sound bath to help ground and integrate the experience and come together in community. I kick off the month with another yoga and sound bath collaboration with Roots & Boots Lifestyle on this Sunday 3rd at 4pm. Another morning sound bath on Friday 8th at 10.30 A winter solstice sound bath on Thursday 21st at 7pm Some headlines for January are- Sound bath on Thursday 4th Jan at 7pm Shamanic drum journey and sound bath collaboration with Katrin Albrecht on Sunday 14th Jan at 4pm Kirtan (children welcome too) on Sunday 28th January at 4pm. Mellow steady flow. The sweet spot of creativity. Years ago in the late nineties I interviewed Linton Kwesi Johnson when he was in Aberyswyth with Brian Patten doing a poetry tour entitled Double Vision. He had also just relased his More Time album which was more my interest as I had a weekly Reggae show on Radio Ceredigion called Babylon Burndown every Saturday night, playing the whole range of Jamaican music from Ska, Rocksteady, Roots, Dub, Dancehall and Ragga. The only proviso I gave myself was it had to be roots conscious lyrics and energy, no slackness. I was happy to help promote LKJ's latest release and we had a really informed chat. For 18 months I produced and presented the show, the first ever Reggae show on the airwaves in Wales before I moved back to London when my first daughter was born. During that time I interviewied Max Romeo, Junior Delgado, Lucky Dube and U Brown too. Great conversations and memories indeed, all of them very generous with their time, promotional material and offering a vocal promo for my show too. Happy memories indeed. This tune in the background is called Songs of Blood from a much earlier album in 1978 called Dread Beat An' Blood. I love the contrast between Linton's deep voice with such a powerful bass timbre and Vivian Weathers mesmerising falsetto higher range. I think its a masterpiece Linton coined the phrase mellow steady flow in his song Street 66 fom his Bass Culture album and I love how to me it really captures the sweet spot of creativity and the flow of life. Just being in (or as )the mellow steady flow! From this point I often feel I produce my best artwork.
Here’s some v quick examples of some over -toning and throat singing which I incorporate within my sound baths and one to one sessions when the energy calls. Some musings about sound bath nourishments and events going on for the rest of July. I talk about the symbolism of the origami butterflies I make and offer to everyone. About the kheer I make too and offer to everyone after the sound bath alongside some fruit and light snacks to help ground the experience and gather in community. And the opportunity to take a baby “shiva dreadlock” spider plant home too. The final sound bath is on wed 26th July not Thu 27th as I suggested on the video. Here’s a quick video I did talking about one of the instruments I use during a sound bath. It’s a Shruti box and I use it to weave intuitive sounds and tones and mantra as well as using it to sing everyone’s name to welcome them into the space and for them to really feel the energy of their name being sung into their hearts. I finished by singing the mantra Om mani padme hum. Hope you enjoy it. If you feel moved to come and experience a sound bath all the information on all the events I do is on this link- https://www.gilesmountain.com/events The next group sound bath I am doing is on Wed 12th at 7pm.
