602 Sqn Reserves
Glasgow's own, 602 Sqn RAuxAF provides support to Air Operations, Air Battle Management, and Intelligence output.
We recruit those with no previous military experience, skilled entrants with directly transferable skills, and ex-regulars from any service.
This July, 7 members of 602 Sqn Reserves deployed to Nijmegen, Holland for the world famous “4 day marches”.
This was the 106th year of the event with 800 British troops contributing to an international military contingent totalling 5000 marching troops. A total of 160km is covered, in uniform and carrying 10kg over hard road surfaces. Planning and training for the Sqn team started in November 2023 and the award of the ‘Nijmegen Medal’ 🏅 on Charlemagne field represented the culmination of months of dedication and commitment.
Every member of the team had to confront their own challenges, dig deep and support one another over the course of the event. A huge achievement that will hopefully encourage future RAuxAF teams. Well done troops 🎉

A special day for the RAuxAF at Buckingham Palace in our centenary.
Royal Auxiliary Air Force marks 100th Anniversary with Parade at Buckingham Palace On 17 May 2024, thousands of spectators gathered in front of Buckingham Palace to see the King’s Colour Squadron of the Royal Air Force and colour parties from nine Royal Auxiliary Air Force (RAuxAF) squadrons celebrate
The Sqn is very proud that our Sqn Standard will be among the eight Sqn Standards on parade at the Dual Mount Buckingham Palace.
Later this week, on 17th and 19th May, the King’s Colour Squadron will take part in a Dual Mount on the Forecourt of Buckingham Palace, in front of HRH the Duke of Gloucester. 🏰
A Dual Mount means both Old Guard and New Guard come from the King’s Colour Squadron. This will be only the third and fourth time in history; the last time coincided with the 80th Anniversary of the RAF Regiment on 1 Feb 2022.
88 members of the King’s Colour Squadron will be on parade on both days, with eight RAuxAF standard bearers and two RAuxAF Warrant Officers on May 17th.
The Sqn 602 Sqn Reserves was straight off the starting blocks into our new training year from April. Sqn personnel were quick to take up a variety of tasks which included:
Support to Maritime Patrol Aircraft tasking at RAF Lossiemouth
Leading the way with the standing-up of a brand new Space Flight.
The completion of the Nijmegen Qualification March; which a number of our personnel are taking part in this year.
We also welcomed new Sqn members and facilitated a number of well-deserved awards, medals, and promotion presentations.
All in all, a ‘flying’ start to our year so far.

A number of 602 Sqn Reserves’ colleagues, both serving and retired, were amongst the recipients of the coveted Lord-Lieutenant’s Meritorious Service Award at a recent event in Glasgow’s wonderful City Chambers.
Brilliantly hosted by Lowland Reserve Forces' and Cadets' Association, to whom we are extremely grateful, this was an immensely humbling experience for all.
Accompanied by employers and families - the valuable support of whom, our Reserves and Cadets are eternally grateful for - all the worthy recipients were rightly proud to accept their awards but were immensely modest in their achievements.
Many congratulations to everyone involved.
(Very respectfully, please don’t tag our colleagues.)
The Sqn was privileged to host and facilitate the UK Space Command Reserve Force Capability event, held within the University of Strathclyde Technology and innovation centre, formalising the establishment of a Space Flight within our team. Our RAF Reserve personnel look forward to progressing and developing their support to the Space domain.

602 SQN XO - SERVE Title: 602 SQN XO. Recruiting Service: Royal Air Force. Region: Glasgow City. Rank: Flight Lieutenant. Application Deadline:
Many congratulations indeed to John Cruickshank VC, a former WWII pilot from Aberdeen who has received a long-overdue medal to add to one of the most impressive “racks” of medals, of anyone serving in that period.
John Cruickshank VC, who will be the wonderful age of 104 on 20th May 2024, was presented with the Air Efficiency Award at his home earlier in March 2024.
The Air Efficiency Award was awarded to many volunteers who served in the RAF’s two reserve contingents during the War, and later. However, the 75-year oversight that led to Cruickshank never being awarded the medal was only uncovered last month.
Flying Officer Cruickshank sustained 72 separate injuries while sinking a U-boat; an action that saw him awarded the Victoria Cross, the UK’s highest award for gallantry. During that sortie and despite being horrifically injured, he never accepted the morphine that was offered to him, as he wished to be available and aware, in order to cover the pre-landing checklist prior to his Catalina returning home.
He is the last living recipient to have been awarded the VC during the Second World War.
The presentation of the medal to one of the RAF’s most highly decorated Volunteer Reserves, comes as the Royal Auxiliary Air Force marks its 100th anniversary.
Many congratulations also to Group Captain (retd) Bob Kemp of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force Foundation, himself also an accomplished Airman (as we were known then), for all his sterling and tireless work in ensuring that Mr Cruickshank was able to receive his long-overdue award.
Please click on the link below to read for more details of Mr Cruickshank’s truly inspirational story.👇🏻
MEDAL 75 YEARS OVERDUE AWARDED TO ABERDEEN PILOT JOHN CRUICKSHANK VC A Second World War pilot from Aberdeen has received a long overdue medal to add to one of the most impressive racks of medals of anyone serving in that period. John Cruickshank VC, who is 103 years old, was presented with
Support aircrew as a Air & Space Operations Specialist, facilitating the successful planning and ex*****on of flights and missions.

RAF Benevolent Fund Op Christmas Hampers
The Sqn had the great pleasure in facilitating the RAFBF Op Christmas Hamper initiative across Greater Glasgow and Ayrshire.
A massively worthwhile task, kindly supported by 602 Sqn members, Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde Air Squadron, RAF Association - Glasgow Branch and RAF Association Ayr & Prestwick Branch and of course the RAFBF.
Thank you to all for their hard work in creating and delivering the hampers to our Royal Air Force veterans. The teamwork, camaraderie and the opportunity for a biscuit and a brew meant a lot to all involved. One veteran stated that ‘the visit was the highlight of their week’ reinforcing how much it means to our personnel who have previously served. All were very appreciative of the efforts from the RAFBF and everyone involved with the deliveries.
Great work from the combined .

Having recently moved under the command of RAF Boulmer the Sqn was very pleased to host the Station Commander at our HQ, in their new role as our Commanding Officer.
Accompanied by additional staff from the station, including the new Padre, the visitors were treated to various briefings and forums across the Sqn during the course of our Duty Weekend. Highlights were the informal meet and greet with Sqn members, the presentation of promotions and not forgetting our Sqn curry night.
Additionally, on this Duty Weekend, we must convey our congratulations to all 8 students currently on the ASOS(R) No2’ Flight Operations training course as they all successfully completed module one.
