Or through my website contact page. Hi!
I'm a Scottish artist, originally from South Africa, working predominantly in the traditional medium of oil paint on canvas, linen and aluminium panels. Formally trained in marketing and graphic design, I am largely self-taught and have been painting and drawing since early childhood. My dad, a self-taught artist himself, was the first to introduce me to art. I was born in Zimbabwe and grew up on
We are absolutely delighted with this simply stunning cover for Artmag UK and one of our Big Art Show artists, Charmaine Boyle. Enjoy! show runs Tue-Sat 10-4pm, 10-2 Causeyside St The Art Department, Paisley at The Paisley Centre
Just received an email saying my painting has been selected for the cover of ‘Artmag 27 Sep cover’ (Scotlands largest circulation art magazine) 🤗🤗😁
This painting, ‘Awakening’, is available to purchase through the exhibition in Paisley, Scotland.
Just a little blown away by this news 😊😃
Was so blown away that I won the ‘Talent Prize Award’ for my painting ‘Sakura’, that I never even noticed I also won an ‘Honourable Mention Award’ for ‘Frangipani’s’. 😁🤗
Entering competitions is never an easy decision for me, and I usually do them last minute, after far too much deliberation. 🤔 But this has been so good for me, and receiving any form of credit/appreciation as an emerging artist keeps me inspired and motivated to continue working hard 🙏.
The winners gallery is available to view online at https://www.teravarna.com/winners-2024-color-8
I am currently busy with two new paintings, one of water lilies and another of cherry blossoms - simply in love with nature and the continuous inspiration it offers 🥰👩🎨
Have a lovely day everyone and thanks for following my art journey 🙏🥰
🤗🙏😁
So pleased and honoured to find out my painting, ‘Sakura’, has won the Talent Prize in the “8th Color” Art Competition in the TERAVARNA 2024 International Juried Art Competition. The online winners gallery is available to view @ https://www.teravarna.com
🤗🤗
This painting is currently being displayed at ‘The Big Art Show 2024’ (link in bio / website) and is available to purchase through the exhibition.
Teravarna is a wonderful organisation that gives artists an international platform to showcase their works while also helping artists through sponsorships, grants and cash prizes.
It’s always an honour to know my art is appreciated 🥰
I am thrilled to have been highlighted by Susan Mansfield, an esteemed art critic for The Scotsman, in a recent article in The Scotsman magazine (14.09.24).
With over 1500 artworks on display from 586 artists around the world, I’m rather pleased to get a mention for three of my paintings 😊🤗
You can find out more in my latest blog post in Studio Journals (link in Instagram bio) or by visiting my website CharmaineBoyle.art.

My work zone this quiet morning 😃
A bit of a mess but making good progress on a new big one 🎨👩🎨.
Starting work on the reflections and enjoying getting lost in this new one 🎨☺️
“In creating: don’t be seeking or searching for interesting things. That’s not how you do it. Do it because it haunts or asks or desires or calls and you need to sink your lungs and heart and core and arms straight in until it seeps out on to pages, instruments or canvases. This is where the pulse lives.” ~ Victoria Erickson
I added some glazes - my favourite step in watching a painting transform. So pleased with how this turned out as this one was very experimental.
“Immersion” - oil on canvas - 51 x 76cm
In a world that seems to never stop spinning, sometimes we simply need to escape from it all and seek out the quiet…
“FINDING THE QUIET” - oil on canvas (80 x 80cm)
Finished this one this morning along with a few others 🎨🤗
“Frangipani’s” - oil on canvas - 80 x 80cm
With some paintings I simply know they are done… but this particular piece has toyed with me. I have not wanted to rush to call it done either, allowing myself to steadily work on it, adding layers and details and then live with the painting between each.
I hoped to capture a sense of vulnerability and strength with these two dying roses…the nuanced emotions of surrender and acceptance and the beauty woven into every stage of life.
This morning I have worked on 4 paintings, jumping between each and letting my creativity flow. I love days when I’m less in my head and just able to create without overthinking it all.
So, I’m finally happy to call this one done and look forward to varnishing it soon.
“Transience” - oil on canvas (91 x 51cm)
❤️
Been so busy between 🎨 in the studio and gardening, but I really enjoyed painting these peonies this week…my favourite flower 😍.
I have added some insitu images as this painting works really well in so many rooms (especially as it’s so large) 😍
“Peonies” - Oil on canvas - 100 x 152cm
“Beauty appears where there is an edge. A type of courage. A fearlessness against the unknown. Not where there is perfection. “ ~ Victoria Erickson
I returned to this painting this morning (which I thought was done), but something about the flowers made me want to add a little more. Using oleo impasto medium I added some glazes to some petals and I’m so glad I did…this is close to being done I think🤗🎨
“Transience” - Oil on canvas - 91 x 61cm
WIP - something new slowly coming together…
I do love waterlilies 🪷
Base layers done, will leave to dry and then return to add further definition, glazes and highlights.
Oil on canvas - 51 x 76cm
Had such a lovely evening at the opening launch of the Big Art Show in Paisley last night. So amazing to see my art showcased at such a well organised event and have 6 of my paintings on display with so many other incredible artworks.
The exhibition runs until the 16th November.
WIP - added further details and glazes for vibrancy and depth. Really pleased with how this is turning out.
Oil on canvas - 100 x 100cm
Finished my studio peg hanging wall system today and it works so well🤗🥰
It’s wonderful having made good use of the available wall space knowing I can safely hang paintings to dry / store. My studio is steadily becoming more and more functional, whilst remaining a peaceful space to create 👩🎨
This was hard work though, so I’m very glad it’s over now 🤣
WIP - Spent most of the day in the studio working on this and am so pleased with how it’s turning out. Will return to refine any additional details once dry 👩🎨🎨☺️
Oil on canvas - 80 x 80cm
🌸
Back to working on this latest painting today (some tropical flowers making me wish I was on an island somewhere 👙🏝️) … hoping I might finish all the basics at least as it’s been hard finding time (and energy) to paint 🤞🎨☺️
My body is aching from all the woodwork I have been busy with as I construct my studio peg hanging system. I put this off for 6 months as I knew it would be a lot of work, but it’s almost there now. Just need to screw them all into place and then things can return to normal 🛠️😁
I’m so in love with my creative space and so grateful to have it (took decades to get to this point), so this really is a labour of love. I have worked 12 hour shifts over the last few days measuring, sanding, drilling and painting the wood (grateful for my daughter’s help with it all - girl power! 💪🤣). Weather in Scotland has been all over the place, despite the rest of the U.K. basking in a heatwave, but the moments of sunshine have been well used to get some of the messy work done outside when we can. The plan with all this is to have a space to have artwork hang to dry / be safely stored, especially my larger works.
Sometimes the cold weather has its perks… been cozied up in the studio recently listening to the rain whist doing what I love most 💕
“Grace” - Oil on canvas - 40 x 40cm
💜
My latest floral oil painting, ‘Reverie’.
Between framing my art for the exhibition, packaging it, then needing to hire a van to take them all safely!, I have somehow managed to also squeeze in some time at my easel!
This painting, which I titled ‘Reverie’ (a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts; a daydream ☺️) is another in my latest floral series (combining all I have learned over the past two years).
As a self-taught artist I have experimented with oils in so many different ways… I have tried painting with only a palette knife, experimenting with glazes, gold leaf, texture and abstract elements, playing with colour mixes and different brushes and sponges to my fingers - constantly inspired by so many current artists whom I adore across many genres. Each step has been a search for discovering my own style, something that connects me to the canvas, moves me and keeps motivating me, whilst feeling natural and not forced.
It’s good to take time to reflect and be proud of how far you have come sometimes, whoever you are. My latest work feels like I have found a style I both enjoy and adore. The bokeh backgrounds are so dreamy and an absolute joy to paint - the freedom and flow of the paint and the effects I can create keep me inspired and wanting to start another as soon as one is finished.
Plus I love that I get to enjoy each artwork in my home as I wait for it to dry 💕
