In my ongoing quest to find that elusive quality that makes my art recognisable as ‘my art’ I moved from wood panel to canvas as a substrate this weekend (and quickly realised how different they are!)

The techniques I’ve been using to bring my little trees to life on the smooth wood is actually pretty impossible to recreate on canvas. That said, canvas has introduced me to a dozen different qualities that I’m now excited to explore. So here’s my first little foray into the world of acrylic on canvas. Let me know what you think. Finishing touches… 👌🏻

Another little work in progress, though I think this one is pretty much complete. How do you know when to call a piece done? You may as well be asking me the meaning of life or how long it would take to walk to the moon because I haven’t a clue and I suspect the answer is just as subjective. No name (title?) yet. I’m pretty rubbish at naming artwork, in case you haven’t noticed 🤣

Stumbled upon this thing the other day and thought I’d give it a go.

2022 has been an eventful year for me, culminating in the launch of my Etsy store. I’ve met so many great people, including incredible creators who’ve taught me a lot about what it takes to be a successful artist. Oh, and I finally feel like I’m starting to find that elusive ‘style’ people keep banging on about. So, yeah, it’s been a good year for sure and I’m hoping 2023 will be even better!

Purple thrives at the intersection of blue and red. It enlightens and inspires, uplifts and encourages. Purple is mystery and creativity and the myriad hues of imagination all wrapped in a velveteen bow.

This is ‘Romantic Roses’ a loose, impressionistic watercolour painting with coloured pencil embellishments. I wanted to create something wistful and dreamlike as a hazy summer’s afternoon. I love the soft pinks and muted greens and how they flow together, creating the interesting textures and patterns in the paint.

I used a combination of wet and dry techniques to make this contemporary spring landscape, allowing the paint to flow freely across the paper to create the soft transitions and dreamlike quality of the piece. ‘Moonlight Rose’ Original Watercolour Painting

I wanted a more photo-realistic result with this painting while retaining a 'painterly' effect. I used a combination of wet and dry techniques which resulted in a piece that is both striking and expressive. With a limited palette of blacks and deep granulating purples, this painting would make a striking addition to any room.

‘Meadow's End’ Original Watercolour Painting

I used a traditional wet-on-wet technique to make this contemporary landscape, allowing the paint to flow freely across the paper to create the interesting abstractions and sumptuous granulations that give the piece it’s fun, spring-like feel. I used stencils to further embellish these unique patterns, evoking interest and giving a zingy feel to the piece. With a limited palette and jewel-like tones, this painting would make a striking addition to any room.

"Seek to be the purple thread in the long white gown." - Epictetus

Some people believe the colour purple means transition and grandeur and is often associated with the monarchy. Many use purple to signify extravagance, creativity, and peace. Purple is a beautiful colour born of an infusion of red and blue, where red signifies energy and power, and blue portrays peace and tranquility.

Quite fitting at the moment, I think.

A little trio of watercolours using my favourite zoisite genuine from Daniel Smith. I love using a palette knife to add the paint to wet paper. Then I just sit back and watch the picture form. Sometimes it take me a while to see where it’s going (and a lot of the time it goes nowhere) but the journey’s always interesting!

How do my arty friends out there like to work? I’d love to hear about some of your methods of mark making. Maybe pick up some tips too!
