My debut album, ‘LP 1’ is out now!

https://ffm.to/listslp1

It is available to stream everywhere! Alternatively if you would like to pay to download it, you can do so on Bandcamp.

I spent quite a long time making this album. Probably too long. I wrote Veil 10 or so years ago and knew that it was the end point that I had to get to… and then it was a long time kind of figuring out how to get there. But I think, hopefully, they form a somewhat coherent body of work, and I hope you enjoy listening to it.
The album is half an hour long, so it would be great if you had the time to listen to it. Thank you!

Also, I’ve done a typically poor job of promoting the album, so if you think you know someone that might like it, please share it with them/let them know.

Finally, thank you to Help Musicians UK for part funding the recording of LP 1 and to everyone involved in the making of this record -

Mixed by Riley Knapp.
Mastered by Adam Haggar at Mount Olympia Mastering.

Katie Rush plays violin on tracks 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9
Rita Andrade plays violin and viola on track 9.
Nicola Boag plays viola on tracks 1, 2, 4 and 5.
Elspeth MacKay plays cello on tracks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
Jackie Baxter plays cello on track 9.

Gavin Lamont plays drums on tracks 4 and 5.
Jamie Savage plays bass guitar on track 4.

All strings and drums recorded and engineered by Jamie Savage at Chem 19.

Cover artwork by I. Graham.
Cover layout by Rydo.

Thank you for everything,

Ali/Lists

This is one of the earliest (mini) branding projects that came up after starting out as an independent studio. Completely forgotten about until recently and pleased to say it still appears to be in use 14 years on … though I haven’t actually done anything with it in that time! Feels like it’s aged well nonetheless.

For the past year or so, I’ve been working on-and-off on a personal project initially sparked while watching a TV broadcast of Marvin Gaye’s iconic performance at Montreux Jazz Festival in 1980.

I recognised the wonderful typeface used for the festival brand and featured in the stage set, but had to do a little digging to remind myself of its name. It was of course the late 20th century classic, Sinaloa, designed by legendary Swiss graphic design trailblazer Rosmarie Tissi. Originally created in 1972, it became part of Letraset’s dry transfer Letragraphica range in 1974, with a digital version made years later before being discontinued in 2021.

The realisation that no quality version of the font was available prompted an attempt to draw my own, which I did from scratch using scans of the aforementioned dry transfer sheets (pictured). The visuals featured here provide a soulful snippet of the resulting working font in action — and a tribute to Marv.

Just as I was applying the final touches, it came to my attention that a new extended version, authorised by Rosmarie Tissi, is due to launch this year with an accompanying publication. To avoid trampling any toes, this one will be parked and reserved for personal use. In the mean time, I look forward to seeing the fresh official take when it drops.

A fun challenge and great exercise in becoming better acquainted with some of the mechanics of typeface design — something I'll be doing more of for sure.

Ryan

A fun challenge for any design project — large or small — is trying to find a way to make even the most ‘boring’, utilitarian item more interesting … or even more useful. The packing boxes behind Darran Illicit in this photo are a great example of a really simple idea that does this. Empty or full, they fit together to form a graphic wall and a nice branded backdrop. Which means there’s never any need to order any hideous pull-up banners for events. Always good.

Mindfulness Everywhere: Modern meditation; brand, packaging — Rydo 08/09/2023

Added some 'new' (actually old) work to the site — a great case study of visual identity rolled out over a period of time to everything from digital applications to a deck of colourful cards. Has always been really fun, challenging and rewarding to work with Rohan and his team on projects for Mindfulness Everywhere.

Mindfulness Everywhere: Modern meditation; brand, packaging — Rydo Mindfulness Everywhere is a dynamic creative brand that creates modern products which combine meditation, technology and design.

A favourite project from recent times — Stay Odd: The Magic of Everyday Things. A music book (album) by the inimitable Stanley Odd. An alternative take on a ‘physical release’ at a point when record pressing plants were backed up to oblivion. Made the Scottish Album of the Year shortlist and the first printed run sold out just two days after its official release.

Been going through some archive work and found this fun little brand from a few years back — for tots’ music classes. Don’t think much was ever done with it sadly.

G&TS AT THE GFT
-
It’s uplifting to see the cultural life of the city resuming properly. I don’t think I’ll ever take for granted again sitting in a darkened room full of strangers, enjoying the kind of communal escapism that can only be offered by the cinema. We’re sponsoring this years , and were serving up G&Ts at last nights opening screening of “The Timekeepers of Eternity”. Checkout their page for details of more screenings over the next few days, culminating in Sunday’s award ceremony, which will feature more tasty beverages courtesy of your favourite local distillery.
