Match report Gloucester Hurricanes V Chippenham
Sunday 26th Nov 2023
Captain – Cerys
Following an epic afternoon the day before cheering on Gloucester men’s and Gloucester Hartpury ladies, the hurricanes took on Chippenham. It was a cold and damp afternoon, but luckily Bruce had warmed up enough from Friday nights county training to ensure the team were prepared and ready to go.
Cerys got the team ready with a mighty speech, Chippenham took an early lead, and then the hurricanes got into the game with some great kicking from Allegra. The kicking in the whole game from Allegra was amazing to watch often putting the ball right in the Corners, very impressing Allegra.
Hurricanes line out functioned so well and was a real threat all game with Cerys having a great game and hitting her jumpers Kimi and Amelia each and every time. Big shout out to Kimi who owned the line and very strong lifting from Soph and Aravela.
Chippenham with their very experienced side did come back on the attack and if it wasn’t for a try saving insanely good tackle from penny at full back Chippenham would have been in to score.
Sadly we did see an injury to our very talented flanker Ellie during a scrum, and we all wish her a speedy recovery.
Our first half wingers Meg P and Rosie played so well, taking the game to Chippenham with strong runs and tackles, Rosie took on (and survived) a huge double tackle on her from Chippenham, presenting the ball fast and effectively, ( must admit I do feel guilty when the hit came as it was I who said pass out to Rosie).
Soon after that at a break down in the 10 meter line, Amelia used her vision and reading of the game to take the ball from the ruck look up and spot no Chippenham defenders home down the blind side to dart down the touch line to score an amazing try they added great energy to the side.
The backs handling and defence was also spot on today with Meg R putting in a tremendous half half performance.
Second half came and with another Cerys speech the team were ready to go.
Hurricanes had Chippenham players worried as the momentum seemed to be swinging hurricanes way and considering Chippenham are top of the league they just shows how far we have come as a team.
Huge games from Aravela and Soph with their trade mark strong powerful running, led to hurricanes being camped on the Chippenham line. Sadly ball was turned over but with great ball retention play scarlet and Ruby ran back at chippenham, both being a handful for the Chippenham defence. Scarlet and Ruby playing so well.
Shania coming in on the second half, running throw players with her strong running lines , beating players left, right and centre. Hurricanes piecing together phase after phase with quick ball from scrum half Izzy.
With the forwards playing out of the skins with massive performances from Jorja putting him her trade mark big tackles and 100% commitment.
The second half continued to see solid play from Ella, owning it at outside centre, causing all sorts of issues for Chippenham.
All that effort saw Allegra cross the line for our second try, Allegra showing her true class again.
Despite this huge effort and massive improvements Chippenham to their credit did run in a couple more try’s, but that wasn’t made easy by the likes of Megan M very sharpe in defence and attack.
The game ended 42 – 10 which in my professional opinion (lol), didn’t give a true reflection of the game.
At the end of the game there so plenty to shout about for Hurricanes, all supporters said how well everyone played.
Ladies the team work shown on Sunday and the improvements made are crazy, Chippenham are a quality top of the table side but we outplayed them for parts of the game and should be so so proud, you all did so well. .
Personally I want to thank all you players, you made it a great afternoon of rugby.
Allegra was player of the match with an outstanding performance.
Also special mention to Shane, stepping in at short notice to ref the game, shane had a solid game of refereeing.
Bring in our next match.
Kind regards
Salmon

Sundays u14s player of the match!! 💪
Today’s U16 player of the match 👏
Gloucester Hurricanes U14s played host to Dings Crusaders U14s today at Gloucester Old Boys RFC.
This was the first outing for the new look U14s team who have welcomed a lot of new players into the squad. It’s really encouraging to see the amount of new players involved this week, with 28 players in total available for selection! Awesome!!
The first 20 minute session saw a strong start for the Hurricanes who dominated possession and play scoring some very good tries.
In the second session the Hurricanes side made a significant number of changes to bring on our newer players. Dings started to find some form and string a number of phases of play together that saw them take the lead by the end of the second session.
The third session kicked off with Hurricanes ringing in the changes again. A really strong start with 2 tries in quick succession from the Hurricanes, got their confidence back up and they regained control over the game.
The final session was a much closer contest with Dings putting up a solid effort against a fresher Hurricanes side. The Hurricanes managed to control the remainder of the game with some very strong and effective defence.
The final result saw the Hurricanes take the spoils, winning the match 52-20. A very promising start to the season for this developing U14 side. Lots of great tries scored and conversions slotted today by both our experienced players and debutants alike!
Player of the match was Mya Khan for her stand out performance in defence as well as going over for two tries. Well done Mya!
Also a big shout out to the girls who ensured that the game could go ahead by agreeing to make up the numbers on the Dings side.
Bring on the next game!!
The Gloucester Hurricanes U16s first ever league game took place on Sunday at Drybrook RFC. Following a strong warm up in all 4 seasons of weather the game got underway and Gloucester Hurricanes were the first to strike with Allegra slotting 2 excellent penalties before scoring and converting her own try to make it 0-13 to the Hurricanes. Drybrook got on the score sheet next with some strong forward carries leading to an unconverted try and were pressing hard for another score before coughing up possession inside the Hurricanes 22, a hack through led to Ella scooping the ball up and running the length of the pitch to score under the posts despite being chased done by the rapid Drybrook fullback. Try converted by Allegra to make the score at halftime 5 - 20.
In the second half, Drybrook seemed to have the majority of the possession so Hurricanes need to do a lot of defending. A couple of times this resulted in bunching behind the ruck and space being available out wide. Drybrook exploited this space with their fast running backs to close the gap to 17-20. Numerous injuries for both sides resulted in a disjointed final quarter. With 1 minute left on the clock, Drybrook had an attacking scrum on the Hurricanes 22. They recycled through several phases and then made a bolt for the corner flag to score but were tackled in to touch by 3 Hurricanes players.
Final score: Drybrook 17 - Gloucester Hurricanes 20.
Player of the match for excellent work at the breakdown: Sophie Larner.
Thank you to Drybrook for hosting and the Hurricanes look forward to return fixture. Wishing those injured players a swift return to the pitch.
Yes girls 👏

Weston Hornets 07/01/2023
A wet and windy afternoon at Old Richians was the setting for opening match of 2023 against Weston Hornets. The Gloucester Girls were a little rusty having not played since early in December but a strong carry from Cerys lead to the opening try.
Following some back and forth in the middle of the pitch, Gloucester Girls won a scrum against the head. Ellie made a break from the halfway line and powered through to score.
From a Gloucester scrum on the 22 metre line, Ellie made a another good break but tackled just short of the try line. Kimi was in close support at ruck to snipe and score.
From the restart, Gloucester Girls went on the attack immediately. Ellie passed it out to Taz on the wing and following some quick recycling Mya powered through the defence to score.
Gloucester were ruthless from the restart with Allegra powering through the Hornets defence from the kick to score under the posts. Conversion by Shania made it 27-0 at half time.
During the second half Gloucester were guilty of a few too many high hand offs when attacking. Thankfully their defence was immense and managed to keep the Hornets out.
Following some good phase play off a scrum Gloucester got a penalty on the 22 metre line. A quick tap and another dominate carry from Cerys led to another score for Allegra. Despite the swirling wind, conversion kicked by Shania.
From the restart, there was carbon copy try from the first half for Allegra to go secure the kick and sprint though and under the posts with Shania adding the extras.
The Gloucester Girls kept applying pressure and scrum dominance led to another good break for Allegra to score her fourth of the afternoon. Try converted by Shania.
The Hornets kept playing to the final whistle and played some cracking heads of rugby to find the space on the outside to round the excellent Gloucester defence to score with the last play.
Final score: 48-5.
Well done girls!
Gloucester Girls Vs Drybrook
It was a rather cold and grey afternoon at Gloucester Old Boys and I think the girls were glad to get the game underway to get warm. An early break in the backline led to Allegra diving over to score. 5-0 🏉
After a period of sustain pressure from Drybrook and great defence from Gloucester but trying to play it out from behind posts resulted in a Drybrook try almost under the uprights. 5-7. 🏉
The restart didn’t go to plan and following a Drybrook scrum, the Gloucester defence was asleep behind next ruck leading to big gaps for Drybrook to run in a simple score. 5-12. 🏉
Following successive breakdown penalties, Gloucester marched up the pitch. A tap and go to Lottie who gained good ground resulted in another penalty on the Drybrook 5 metre line and a few phases later, Grace powered over to score. Kick converted by Shania. 12-12. 🏉
From restart, Drybrook turned the ball over and following a strong carry from a tap and go Drybrook scored to bring the first half to a close. 12-17. 🏉
After some back and forth in the second half, a strong carry from Lottie from half way and quick recycling led to another breakdown infringement. From the penalty, Maya resembled the skittle ball from Friday night and hit some of Drybrook tacklers back and went over to score. Try converted by Shania. 19-17. 🏉
Another Gloucester attack but this time Gloucester playing the ball on the ground gave Drybrook the chance to clear. From the kick, Allegra positioned herself perfectly to stop the ball reaching touch and went off on a strong run before Kimi received the ball to power over the line to score. Shania hit the crossbar with the conversion attempt. 24-17. 🏉
With 4 minutes on the clock, Drybrook went looking for a score to draw level with some great plays taking the ball up to the Gloucester 5 metre line. Excellent defensive pressure led to a knockdown and a Gloucester scrum under the posts. Rather than playing for safety, Gloucester backed themselves to run it out but Drybrook stole the ball and scored. 24-22. 🏉
Following a nervous last couple of minutes, Gloucester managed to win the ball back from a breakdown and kicked it out for the win. 🙏🙏
Final score 24-22.
Thank you to Drybrook from a fiercely competitive game. Well done to all the Gloucester girls, especially those playing for the first time in a while and also those playing out of position. Well done to Eliza on captaining the team for the first time.
See you on Thursday at Hucclecote RFC for training.
Thanks to the supporters in the cold including Cerys and Amelia for their photography skills!
