Do I use heat therapy or cold therapy? ๐ค
I get asked this question a lot by clients, is it best to use heat or ice?
Treating pain with either hot or cold treatment can be extremely effective for a number of different conditions or injuryโs
As a general rule, use ICE for acute injuries or pain, along with inflammation and swelling. Use HEAT for muscle pain and stiffness.
Arthritic clients may use heat for joint stiffness and then cold for swelling and acute pain.
Remember that heat will boost the flow of blood to the area and cold will slow down the blood flow to the area (reducing swelling)
Always remember to seek a medical professional after a injury or if after any treatment the pain or discomfort becomes worse!

Some people I know are always put off by a โdeep tissue massageโ because of the pain they think they may experienceโฆ
Yes you may experience some discomfort during the massage and yes it is completely normal to experience some tenderness a day or two after your massage or even a bruised like feeling.
Us as therapists always aim to keep the pressure to a 6/7 on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the highest) you always have the right to let me know how you would like your pressure.

Heat Stroke v Heat Exhaustion
With the high temperatures this week, be careful!
Heat Exhaustion is when your body gets too hot and then this can lead to Heat Stroke ๐ฅต
To prevent this;
โข Drink plenty of water/fluids ๐ง
โข Take cool showers ๐ฟ
โข Wear loose fitted clothing
โข Avoid going out at the hottest time of day โ๏ธ
โข Avoid strenuous activity

A trigger point, often referred to as a โknotโ are tight and tender spots in a muscle. These can create pain and discomfort. Sometimes the trigger points refer pain so the pain can travel into other areas of the body
Most trigger points (knots) occur from muscle overuse, stress, lack of stretching or poor posture. They can be caused also from sustained repetitive activities, for example working on a computer all day or lifting heavy objects at work. The knots then develop when the muscle fibres become over stimulated and can not release from their contracted state
Trigger points can be released when pressure is applied to them, this can be done by either using a firm massage ball or booking in for a deep tissue massage. I recommend everyone using a massage ball or tennis ball in between massage treatments to keep up the progress

This is also know as โrounded shouldersโ or โrounded backโ and this is a result of bad posture!
Postural kyphosis is most common in teenagers and young adults as they often slouch when sitting or standing and this then results the spine to curve forward
The good news is that this can be reversed and treated as it is not structural. If you address the bad posture and your movement patterns then this can be treated!
Massage therapy can help to relax and loosen the sore muscles caused bad posture, allowing your body to position itself in its natural pain free position

Rest and recovery is important to help you improve your performance thatโs why resting and taking time out is important! Our body repairs and strengthens itself in between workouts so taking time out allows you to progress
From a sports therapist point of view, overtraining can lead to injuries which will then set you back for weeks, even months
๐ด good quality sleep is very important during recovery and helps with hormone balance
๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ Massages and stretching helps with muscle repair, prevents injury and helps to keep your muscles flexible, mobile and free of any tension and pain

Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release technique. It can help relieve muscle tightness, soreness, and inflammation, and increase your joint range of motion. Foam rolling can be an effective tool to add to your warm-up or cooldown, before and after a workout
- Increases blood flow to the area your massaging โ
- Promotes recovery โ
- Increases range of movement โ
- Good self massage techniques in between massages โ
- Does not break down knots โ
- Does not release facia or connective tissue โ
- Does not make permanent changes to our tissues โ
You can use a foam roller on pretty much any area but the main areas to use a foam roller on is quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves and back (however be careful on your lower back)

โTennis elbowโ is a condition that causes pain around the outside of the elbow. The correct name for it is โepicondylitisโ
This can occur from overuse or repetitive action of the forearm muscles near the elbow joint
Just because itโs called โtennis elbowโ it doesnโt mean you can get it just from playing tennis, any activity that puts strain or stress on the elbow joint can cause it
If you think you have tennis elbow then you should rest your elbow joint, it will get better overtime without any treatment however with some treatment it will help to speed up the recovery faster!
- rest your injured arm and stop any activities thatโs causing the problem
- holding a cold compress on the area for a few minutes several times a day can help ease the pain
- forearm massage and manipulating the effected area will help to relive the pain and stiffness in the area and improve the range of movement in your arm

A sports massage has a lot more benefits other than just recovering your body from a workout. Even though you donโt play sport or train in the gym our bodies are still put under pressure due to our lifestyles. This can include our posture, the amount of time we are sitting/standing or having a very physical job
Sports massage can help target the areas that are causing us problems, help to aid relaxation, destress, aid recovery and relieve tension
So the simple answer to this question is no! You donโt need to play sport to benefit from a sports massage ๐โโ๏ธ ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ

A post event massage; is performed after a intense training session or competition as part of the recovery process. The massage will be longer than a pre event massage and consist of different techniques to assist recovery from the activity

Sciatica is a type of pain caused by a irritated nerve, it is felt from your bottom down to your feet and toes
๐พ๐ค๐ข๐ข๐ค๐ฃ ๐๐๐ช๐จ๐๐จ; herniated disk, bone spur, narrowing of the spine or weight gain. Common occupational triggers may include prolonged sitting, twisting, inactivity or lifting/carrying heavy objects
Massage therapy can help to relieve sciatic nerve pain in two different ways! Tight lower back muscles can place stress on your nerve roots. By having a massage, this encourages the release of pain fighting endorphins, this can then prove temporary relief from symptoms like throbbing pain in your foot or the burning sensation on your leg

I always warn my clients that they may feel slightly achy or feel slightly bruised the day after having a massage. This is a normal response to a sports massage as the techniques used go deeper into the muscles and are often targeted towards a problem area.
The soreness may feel like DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and this is a result of not having a massage very often or not using that certain muscle very often. This is because the muscles have been manipulated in ways they are not used to for the duration of the treatment.
To help reduce the soreness I recommend;
๐ฆ To stay hydrated before and after
๐ take a nice warm bath
๐ฒ donโt do anything too strenuous for 24 hours following the treatment
๐งโโ๏ธ Keep mobile and do some gentle stretches
๐ You can ask for a lighter pressure
๐ด Try to relax throughout and following your treatment
