Halmyre Urr Ayrshires
Halmyre Urr Ayrshires are milked twice a day to produce creamy milk which is sold to Grahams Dairies and also used to make Glen Urr Ice Cream.
The herd consists of 170 milking cows plus followers and cattle are regularly shown at local and national shows. Breeding in the last 15 years has included Red and White bloodlines with a view to creating a more productive and marketable dairy cow, aiming to keep the percentage at about 50% Ayrshire. The farm itself consists of 375 acres (152 hectares) with 160 acres of silage taken for a first cu

Something we have noticed on line - especially during lockdown, is the attitude of some people about walking in farmers fields - whether there is a footpath or not.
"It's just a field of grass" is the usual comment. Closely followed by "I have always come this way even though there is no right of access" and 'I always walk my dog here".
Now, we have no argument with people using footpaths and walking where there is a right of way but it is never 'just a field of grass". It is a crop just like the rest of the farmers fields.
It may be used for the grazing of livestock such as sheep and cows or it could be left to grow and then harvested as hay, silage or haylage to feed to the animals over winter.
The field could be a wildflower meadow or a breeding ground for rare insects, birds or mammals. It is never 'just a field of grass'.
Now, our main Hayfield does not have a right of access on it but is bordered by a busy country lane on one side and houses along another.
Over the past year, in our hay crop, we have found the following:
- Several footballs (one seen in photo)
- cans of drink
- disposable cups
- balloons with tags to a loved one.
- fire lanterns
- Dog poo bags
And more beyond.
All of these could have caused choking hazards for cattle. Dog poo can cause neospora in livestock which leads to abortions.
Our message from this?
1 - please stick to footpaths
2 - do not use a field with no right of access as your daily exercise - you wouldn't want us using your garden...
3 - if a gate is closed when you use it, close it after you!
4 - be aware of your litter - take it home with you
5 - be aware where your dog toilets and then bag it and bin it. Don't lob it into a field or hedgerow.
6 - please don't release balloons and fire lanterns - blow bubbles or spread seeds.
7 - enjoy the countryside responsibility - it is the responsibility of all users to maintain our green and pleasant lands ๐๐
