Escape to Beacon House for a low-carbon, low-stress seaside retreat.
Aaand breathe. After a fully booked summer, and every weekend for October/November booked, Beacon House has been booked out for the last two weeks...for a refresh.
Our wonderful handyman has given the whole house a fresh coat of paint, installed a new dishwasher, added two more of the ridiculously comfortable armchairs, and we've had the actual gas safety, fire and electrical certificates issued. Phew!
We're back open for bookings and already have a fair few for 2024 - if you're thinking of escaping to the gorgeous Kent coast, check out our availability in the link in our bio. The latest guests have been enjoying the log burner, games room, books and jigsaw puzzles, as well as walks by the sea and watching the storms across the bay.
Absolutely delighted to become an after a busy summer!
Thank you to all our lovely guests for your helpful reviews. It's been an absolute joy to host so many lovely families and to hear about your adventures on the Kent coast.

A couple of millennia ago, was a bustling cosmopolitan destination. So no change there then! The built a fort at , and these towers were part of the original complex. Well, the original version of these towers! They've been heavily restored over the years and in their current form are accessible to the public for scrambling over, like an ancient playground.
Although funnily enough there is a really excellent actual playground adjacent to the towers, also castle themed - highly recommend.
It's a gorgeous 40 minute buggy-friendly walk from the house to Reculver, on a cycle route that runs along the cliff. The distinctive silhouette of the towers can be seen from our beach - I was delighted to find this watercolour painting of the view from the sea's edge, with the towers just visible in the distance. It's going to hang in the master bedroom. 🖼️
Treasure hunting at our local beach!
The path down to Beltinge Beach is directly across from our front door. It just so happens that it's one of the best locations in Britain for finding fossilised remains of ancient sea creatures - sharks' teeth most notably.
Yesterday we had a lovely beach excursion - a sunny afternoon perfect for searching for treasures in the foreshore. The 4 year old has started a collection of sea glass, and interesting shells. We found a tiny fossil - the outline of an ancient creature is traced precisely on this ordinary-looking rock. It's truly see inspiring to think of this place existing thousands of years ago and the creatures that swam here.
Meanwhile our own little sea monster old insisted on plunging into the waves!
🐣 Happy Easter! 🐣
The walk from the house to leads along the coast, sloping down to the sea on one side and lined with hedgerows on the other.
Today the hawthorn was in glorious festive blossom and the sea and sky were the bluest blue.
We went to the beach to collect sea glass this morning, and then to Christ Church on William Street for the Good Friday service. Followed by a swim at Herons Leisure Centre and a picnic lunch by the formal gardens on the seafront.
Easter at was in full swing! We had a great time on the fairground rides and joined in the Easter Bunny Hunt. The sweets fuelled the walk home, and didn't spoil anyone's appetite for a quick barbecue dinner on the balcony - phew!
Easter Sunday Lunch - roast leg of lamb with garlic and mint from the garden, roast potatoes and parsnips, cabbage, Yorkshire puddings and onion gravy - with pear crumble for pudding.
I really appreciate having somewhere to prepare food when on holiday - whether that's buying a homemade cake or punnets of locally grown produce from the market, fixing the children their breakfast just like at home, reheating leftovers from a date night at a favourite restaurant, packing a picnic lunch for a day out, having a barbecue with friends or - like today - a full Sunday roast.
With a young family it can get pretty tiring, not to mention expensive, eating in restaurants all the time, so is a practical and economical option for us - although there are lots of fantastic restaurant and takeaway options for when we want a break from cooking! Also, the 2 year old spilled milk on her dress, took it off, then got ketchup on her vest and stripped that off too. As this kind of behaviour tends to be frowned upon in restaurants, it was just as well that we were at home!
There are actually two kitchens at the house, and we've stocked them with everything you need to feed a crowd - from chefs knives (plus knife sharpener), cupcake tins, smoothie maker, cast iron casserole dishes to a full set of tools for cracking into locally caught lobsters and crabs.
What do you think is most important in a kitchen for a self-catering holiday?
