Sad to see another event be cancelled, but not a surprise.
The NNR has decided to cancel the 2020 Mixed Traction Gala due to take place in June. While this will be a disappointment to many I'm sure it won't come as a surprise given the current circumstances, especially with regard to ongoing social distancing requirements.
The event will return in 2021! In the meantime the photo shows a previous gala visitor making friends with one of the residents!
The previously advertised diesel loco turns for May have also been cancelled with the NNR not expecting to run any services at all during May.
Stay safe everyone and we hope to see you later in the year when services can resume.
Thank you to all that have donated.
Keep safe and well.
You can now help support the North Norfolk Railway PLC in this difficult time by donating online. Anything you can spare to ensure the NNR is still here when the pandemic restrictions are lifted will be a huge benefit.

Over the past few weeks the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus has impacted businesses very severely. No corner of our lives seems untouched or immune to its effects – this includes the Heritage Railway Movement. Following Government instructions we have had to close the railway and we do not know when we will be permitted to reopen. This is hitting the North Norfolk Railway particularly hard coming at the start of our season.
Although there are Government initiatives in place to soften the blow, these are slow in coming through. We have taken actions to limit our outgoings, including furloughing the staff. But, in the meantime we need to pay the staff and subsequently claim the refund from HMRC – that means having cash available at a time when our income is zero.
We therefore need to ask for your help: – we understand it may be difficult for many given employment and financial uncertainties. Our Emergency Appeal (see below) is to help see our Railway through this difficult time, and make sure we’re in good shape and ready to open again as soon as possible. We are hoping to have a Virgin Money Giving page soon but here is how you can help in the meantime.

In 2012, a Tornado hit North Norfolk for our 2012 gala!
LNER A1 60163 ‘Tornado’ visited and headlined our Autumn Gala. Tornado was the first mainline steam engine to be built from scratch. Arguably, the engine is one of the most famous engines and it left a great impression on staff, volunteers and visitors alike!
Surely, it must be time for a return visit?
Tornado Hits North Norfolk Railway Peppercorn class A1 Pacific steam locomotive: No. 60163 Tornado. Watch the Tornado as it travels from Sheringham to Holt, through the North Norfolk countryside.
Talking of famous visitors, we’ve had a locomotive that claims it was the first to go 100mph! Obviously, we didn’t try it on the NNR but even at 25mph, it was certainly was a great engine and we had to have it back!
GWR 4-4-0 ‘City of Truro’ came once for our Autumn Gala in 2009 and again for our Spring Gala in 2011. The locomotive is now on static display, so we were definitely lucky to host it!

As we can’t operate trains at the North Norfolk Railway at the moment and the gala has been postponed, from tomorrow till Sunday there will be various posts with different videos and pictures.
We hope that in this time of great uncertainty and worry for many people, that these posts may help raise some spirits.

So our gala this year hasn’t gone to plan, but everyone’s safety is paramount.
Normally on a Thursday, we’d have a loco cleaning day to prep the engines for a weekends activity’s including the engines getting a deep clean.
Thanks to Leigh Caudwell, I’m please to share this selection of our volunteers on previous pre gala Thursday prep days!
For now, the engines lie silent, but let’s enjoy some pictures!
Further update on behalf of the NNR
SPRING GALA POSTPONEMENT
In view of the rapidly developing public health emergency created by the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the constantly changing official advice coupled with the possibility of social distancing measures being implemented in the coming weeks, the Railway has taken the decision to postpone the full Spring Steam Gala planned for the 27 – 29 March.
We understand that many people who were planning to attend will be disappointed but we feel that this is the responsible approach to minimise risk to our visitors, staff and volunteers. The Railway is however planning to operate a special weekend with the LNER Quad-Art set, the BR Suburban set both of which comprise compartment coaches and our Mark 1 coaches which have compartments. A goods train will also run and the locomotives in use will be LNER B12/3 4-6-0 No 8572, GER Y14 0-6-0 No 564, WD 2-10-0 No 90775 and BR Standard Class 9 2-10-0 No 92203. The Saturday evening fish and chip train will still run.
The North Norfolk Railway continues to operate normally and is open to visitors on the dates published on our timetable page.
All gala tickets will be available for the weekend and anyone who has already booked will be entitled to a reduction to our normal Rover ticket price of £14.00.
We can’t think of an idea much better - a way of riding the rails and having a pint of real ale as you go along! It would be rude not too...
That’s right - only one more week to take advantage of discounted gala tickets!!!
Book tickets before the 17th March to receive a 10% discount.

Alongside the Quad Art set, we are running our 4 coach Suburban Set. This set of coaches have been lovingly restored by our Carriage and Wagon Department and were launched into service in April 2017. Unlike the Quad Art set, these coaches have steam heat fitted!
The Suburban set will be running as Set B throughout the gala weekend. To book your tickets now and receive 10% discount until 17th March or to view the timetables, please visit the link below:

What’s the point of having lots of freight engines if you don’t run a demonstration goods train! The goods train only runs at certain events, so seeing it operating is quite rare. It is running throughout the gala weekend with various different engines pulling them. It’s quite a sight to see and our crews enjoy operating them.
The goods train will be running as GDS on the timetable throughout the gala weekend. Unfortunately, this is non passenger train. To book your tickets now and receive 10% discount until 17th March or to view the timetables, please visit the link below:
https://www.nnrailway.co.uk/spring-gala/
Due to popular demand, we are running the Quad Art set at our gala. These vintage coaches do not come out very often, especially before April as they have no heating! Wrap up warm if you’re intending to travel on this set.
The Quads will be running as Set D throughout the gala weekend. To book your tickets now and receive 10% discount until 17th March or to view the timetables, please visit the link below:
