Mazda offers full-Hybrid tech - with a little help from Toyota.

The Mazda2 Hybrid borrows everything from a fourth generation Toyota Yaris, which means that it's a full self-charging Hybrid - Mazda's first. So, everything's borrowed here, but from one of the supermini segment's most appealing and economical little small hatches. If you get the right deal and don't care about badge semantics, it's all good, especially with this lightly revised updated model. And if you can't quite stretch to one of these but want a small Mazda, there's still the ordinary mild hybrid version to consider.

Forget everything you know about what a top sportscar should be - and start again. This is, after all, exactly what BMW did with this i8, which sold between 2014 and 2020. It's a plug-in petrol/electric hybrid supercar that runs silently on its battery in the morning commute, yet transforms itself into something like a Porsche 911 when you're in the mood. With this second generation 208 supermini, here usefully improved, Peugeot has brought us a small car that really pushes the boundaries in supermini design. This 208 model's engineering may not quite be unique, but all the feel-good stuff really is - the pavement presence, the avant garde cabin. Plus that's been delivered with most of the practicality and efficiency you'll need from a small hatch. Here's a car that's made other brands in its sector really sit up and take notice. And, we think, quite a few buyers who'd never normally choose a Peugeot in this class are going to do the same.

It's getting harder and harder to resist the draw of full-electric vehicles. Most of them seem to be SUVs these days but here's a Zero Emission supermini, the updated version of Peugeot's E-208. It now looks snappier and top versions gain the option of extra power and a larger battery offering a longer 248 miles between charges. An E-208 has no practicality downsides over the combustion-engined version and comes with monthly payment finance you could justify. What's not to like?

With the ID.5 mid-sized coupe-SUV, Volkswagen offers a more aspirational kind of mid-sized EV crossover. It certainly has a dash more pavement presence than the ID.4 SUV it's entirely based upon: and in top GTX hot hatch form, it better showcases the brand's more potent AWD dual motor powertrain. It's been considerably improved in this updated form; enough to now make it worth a second look? You might just think so.
