SQA Results Day, Appeals Process and Access to Marked Scripts
The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) will release this year’s results to candidates across Scotland on Tuesday 6 August 2024.
SQA Arrangements for Appeals 2024 are the same as last year but it is important to be familiar with this process.
Candidates and families/carers should note that alternative assessment evidence will not be looked at by the SQA.
If a candidate or school (with the consent of the pupils and Parent/Carer) does appeal, a senior marker will carry out a marking review of the SQA-marked assessments.
This is not a full re-mark of a candidate’s exam paper but a quality assurance check.
Priority Appeals (UCAS places depend on results)
Information regarding the use of the SQA post results service was shared with pupils at the SQA assembly just before the exam diet and this booklet will be available on our Charleston Academy page.
Please note that the Appeals Learner Direct Service for priority appeals opens at 9am on 6th August and closes at noon on 13th August.
This is where candidates appeal directly themselves without using school support.
You will need your Scottish Candidate Number for this process.
Priority Appeals processed by schools close on 21st August at 5pm.
I will be in school from 11am on Tuesday 6th of August if you wish to discuss a priority appeal or Exam results. Please contact me by phone on 01463 234324 or email at [email protected] and I will get back to you.
Due to ongoing building work scheduled for the summer holidays it will not be possible to meet in school.
Non-priority appeals:
Learner Direct non-priority appeals open at 9am on 6th August and close at noon on 27th August.
Non-priority appeals processed by schools open at 9am on 6th August and close at 5pm on 30th August.
If you wish to discuss a non-priority appeal, please contact Helen Hunter (SQA Coordinator) on [email protected]
Please be aware that following an appeal or markers review, the final grade could stay the same, go up, or could go down.
We recommend that Learners discuss any potential appeal with the school SQA coordinator ,Mrs Hunter
This is to determine whether an appeal is appropriate.
• Staff will consider whether the certificated grade is in line with the school estimate grade,
• Is the final grade reflective of evidence gathered during the course.
• Not achieving an estimated grade would not be the only consideration.
• If you wish the school to appeal on your behalf, consent is required from the candidate if over 16 years of age and the parent or carer if under 16 years of age.
Access to SQA marked scripts:
The SQA have extended a pilot whereby candidates and school staff can request a copy of the marked script in certain subjects. The SQA communication regarding this process will be shared with candidate results. The subjects included in this pilot are:
• Geography National 5 and Higher
• Graphic Communication National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher
• Music National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher
All requests for access to marked scripts will start to be processed in Highland Council schools from Monday 19th August 2024.
Requests for access to scripts must come from the candidate.
By requesting access to a marked script, please note that:
- the candidate gives permission for the script to be downloaded for your personal use
- the candidate agrees to the use of an anonymised copy of the script for staff/course development purposes
Please be aware that as indicated by the SQA, School SQA coordinators will facilitate the sharing of marked scripts, however they cannot scrutinise marking judgements.
Additionally, teaching staff are not able to scrutinise the marking of individual papers or provide individual feedback based on the marking of externally employed assessors.
If you need to discuss appeals or access to marked scripts, please contact Mrs Hunter on [email protected]
On behalf of the school may I take this opportunity to wish our all our Senior pupils the best of luck with their exam results. We hope that on Results day you receive the results you wish for.
Have a lovely holiday !

⬇️ CREATIVE WRITING SUCCESS 📚
High Life Highland run this creative writing competition every two years in memory of one the Highland’s greatest ever novelists, Neil Gunn. The secondary schools category is open to pupils from S3-S6 from all over Highland region and despite only being in S3, Chloe and Rosie managed to claim first place and second place. The topic this year was ‘a moment of sheer, unconditional delight’, a phrase from Highland author Neil Gunn’s novel ‘Highland River’. Rosie’s story ‘Achfary’ was the runner up and Chloe’s piece ‘Summers at Dalnabrec’ won first prize. Both girls were awarded with a cash prize, money for the school and the plate trophy for the school with the best overall entries.

After a Highland debate hiatus, we sent a team to the inaugural Highland School Summer Debate. Rosie Conroy and Chloe Evans (S4) spoke brilliantly, on both prepared and unprepared motions, and showed what Charleston is capable of. We also took along a team of cheerleaders who were very supportive and posed excellent questions when the floor opened. Overall, a very fun trip getting to engage with other debaters from around the Highlands, and lots of thoughts already about how we can take the crown next year.
