Suddenly, but peacefully at Raigmore Hospital with his family by his side, on Monday 11th December, 2023. Sandy Rose, aged 66 years, 6 Grebe Avenue, Inverness. Retired Gas Engineer. Dearly loved husband of Dorrine. Devoted dad of Allison and Andrew, much loved father-in-law of Katie and cherished grandad of Adam and Bailey the dog. Loving brother, brother-in-law, uncle and dear friend to many. Funeral service on Friday 22nd December at 12noon in the Funeral Home of William T Fraser and Son, Culduthel Road, Inverness; thereafter to Kilvean Cemetery. A warm welcome to all. Family flowers only.

In the spirit of Gas Safety Week, I thought I'd share this from a maintenance I was at today.

A pressure relief discharge from a boiler with an isolation valve fitted to the outlet (a 💣 waiting to happen if that valve was ever closed and the pressure in the system rose too high).

The other is a cutting from a gas pipe. Notice that the elbow on the right is stamped yellow to show it's approved for gas but the elbow on the left isn't (water only).

Spotted today during an annual boiler maintenance. Gas fittings used on water pipes. Gas press fittings aren't pressure rated to the same extent as their water equivalents (the typical water pressure in a house is 50-150 times the pressure of a gas installation pipe).

Cut off offending section to prevent potential leaks down the line.

An install this week. Removed a Worcester 28Si II (which has quite a few obsolete parts now) for a Worcester 8000 combi with 12 year guarantee and Hive system fitted.

Exceptionally pleased to say that my wife delivered our first son last weekend, Tyler Caie, weighing in at 9lbs 11oz and 61cm long (🫢). Mother and son are both in good health.

I'm now off for 2 weeks to enjoy some rest and relaxation (aye right! 😂) with our new arrival. I'll be returning to work w/b 3rd July. I'll still be available for messaging etc, but may not respond as quickly as I normally would.

Hive Multizone fitted this week. Customer can now control their two heating zones (main house and master bedroom) and their hot water programme from the Hive app or thermostats.

Something I saw on a Facebook group that I thought was worth sharing. Especially at this time of year when there's family round and log burners are getting fired up. 🎄

A radiator install with pipework this week.

Something I found during a boiler service on a Vaillant today. This black dust you can see on the control panel of the boiler had been building up inside the gas pipe, eventually blocking the inlet filter of the gas valve so much so that the boiler's operating pressure was only at 1/5th what it should be. Copper sulphide is caused by the internal degradation through a chemical reaction in gas pipes, and whilst not overly commonplace these days, can be problematic, especially for modern boilers. The gas line to the boiler has now been purged of remaining deposits and the boiler restored to its correct operating pressure.

This 8-year-old Worcester Greenstar Ri has been leaking from the top seam of the heat exchanger. Worcester guarantee their heat exchangers for 10 years, so this one was able to be claimed through their warranty process. A new part has been sent free of charge, saving the customer a lot of money.

A much-needed full strip service on an Intergas boiler this week.

✅️ Disturbed seals replaced
✅️ Heat exchanger cleaned to improve safety and combustion efficiency
✅️ Magnetic filter cleaned
✅️ Radiators checked and bled for performance
✅️ Flue sealed to the internal and external wall to secure it and prevent re-entry of products of combustion.

FAO landlords

There was a little-known amendment to the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations in 2018 that allows landlords to have their gas appliances checked up to two months before the current record's expiration date while still retaining the original expiration day.

For example:
If the last Landlord's Gas Safety Record was conducted on 28th September 2021, a landlord could choose to have their gas safety carried out as early as the 28th July 2022; the next record would then not being required until the 28th September 2023.
