After a few weeks away undergoing some vital maintenance at Caley Marina our Chief Instructor Kath and Instructors Mandie and Mike brought M/V Celtic North back to her home berth at Inverness Marina. Yesterday we celebrated the first IMO International women in maritime day. Over the last 15 years we have trained hundreds of women and girls of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels from complete beginners joining our Taster sessions and Powerboat Level 1 courses at just 8 years old through to those becoming instructors to pass on their passion for boating. We have also had the pleasure of working alongside some great female instructors and have even grown and developed our own. We are showcasing some of the great females that have joined us; some work and/or teach in the maritime industry and others donate their spare time to some great maritime charities. Checking our Lifesaving Appliances (LSA) is one of the most important checks that we do. It is essential that all the LSA on both our vessels is in good working order and in date. Having completed this months checks it was time to change the Hydrostatic Release Unit (HRU) on our motor cruiser Celtic North. We thought we’d make a quick video to show you how we did it - we hope that you enjoy it. Essential that: the new HRU is correctly marked with the expiry date in 2 years time, the HRU is correctly fitted including the painter line and that unit is registered. This week Alison, Lisa and Simon joined us for a one day Powerboat Refresher. We covered basic navigation and planning, planing speed handling, e-nav and on water navigation, man over board recovery, intro to radar and close quarter handling. A great day out! With a keen NE wind we had a few lumps and bumps to deal with - great for those who qualified inland to experience the coastal environment. Delegates represented the RSPB Love Nature and Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) - definitely the most environmental course we have run! Unfortunately the local wildlife 🦭🐬🦅 was elusive but we DID see some bird life, a dozen swans 🦢 and a juvenile cormorant 🐦.
