Since we started in business in 1884, many other Inverness and Highland businesses have come and gone. Mr Marks and Mr Spencer hadn’t even met when Vicki’s great grandfather founded our business 140 years ago, and the Rose Street Foundry wouldn’t open for another 14 years to come. What Highland businesses from over the years would you like to still see open? Can we start you off with Vicki’s Inverness favourite when she was a wee girl – Pentangle?

We did it! What a brilliant way to celebrate 140 years in business!
We have cycled 140 miles in a day around the most beautiful parts of Ross-shire and raised a whopping £1625 (so far!) for MFR Cash for Kids North Scotland, helping them to support disadvantaged local children. Thank you so much. One word? Ecstatic!
It’s been a great team-building experience too – we’re a close-knit family at John Fraser & Son, but spending a whole long day together with the common aim of raising money for charity has brought us even closer together.
Hot showers and early nights all round, and a rest-day tomorrow. But what a day!

01/06/2024

We’re on our way home – the Dream Team of Mike, James and Nigel have seen us through to Lochcarron, where Chris and Allan take over again.
Although we often drive these roads when we’re visiting clients, conducting funerals, or erecting memorials, it’s amazing to be out and about simply enjoying what’s on our doorstep.
The aim is for all ten of us who have bikes today to cross the finishing line into North Kessock together – there will be a well-earned pint and an early night tonight, that’s for sure!
Can you help us for the final push of our fundraising?

That’s us halfway there – Sarah and her husband Gordon have just crossed the half-way point in our mammoth 140-mile relay cycle around Ross-shire for MFR Cash for Kids North Scotland.
We are doing this for charity, raising money for local underprivileged children. And what a day we have for it!
If you can help us, please do.

The scenery this morning is absolutely stunning – how lucky are we to live and work where we do? We couldn’t resist stopping at this stunning viewpoint, looking down Glen Docherty towards Loch Maree.
It’s brilliant to see all your donations coming in this morning, thank you so much. If you can spare even a couple of pounds to help MFR Cash for Kids North Scotland help underprivileged children in our area, we’d be most grateful. It’s why we’re out today.

Look who Vicki and Bev have bumped into on their travels to Torridon - Callum the friendly stag!

01/06/2024

And they are off! - Good luck Chris and Alan - some steep climbs ahead of you!

01/06/2024

Just look at these satisfied faces – while everyone else is just having their breakfast, this trio have already cycled the first leg of our 140-mile relay cycle for MFR Cash for Kids North Scotland. While they refuel for their next leg, Chris and Allan have set off for Torridon. They’ll be covering around 35 miles and a climb of over 1100 feet – we hope they did enough training!
Our route around Ross-shire will support some of the most deprived children in our local area.
Wish Allan and Chris all the best, and if you can spare a few pounds for this amazing cause, we’re sure it will help spur them on!

01/06/2024

Can you believe it – it’s the day of our 140 mile relay cycle round Ross-shire for local children’s charity MFR Cash for Kids North Scotland! And we can’t think of a better way to celebrate 140 years in business.
At 7am, Mike, James and Nigel, all seasoned cyclists, set off from our funeral home in Inverness, heading over the Kessock Bridge to Garve, getting the first 25 or so miles of our cycle underway. The weather is looking kind so far, so wish us luck! As long as it’s not too wet or windy, hot or ‘midgey’, we’ll be happy.
We’ve already smashed our £1000 fundraising target – can you help us raise even more?

29/05/2024

It’s this Saturday! We’re not sure whether to be carb-loading or tapering our training schedules, but as the sun rises on the 1st of June, we’ll be leaving from Inverness on our charity relay cycle around some of Ross-shire’s most scenic spots.
Look out for us on the road and give us a friendly wave and a toot as you pass. We’ll appreciate the distraction from what’s bound to be an uphill stretch and a headwind!
We are raising funds for MFR Cash for Kids North Scotland. Their work makes an incredible impact on the lives of local children who live in poverty and deprivation, or with illness and disability. If you can donate, please do. Every penny makes a difference.

As we celebrate 140 years in business, let’s look at the four generations who have been at the helm of our Highland family business.
After a Business degree in Edinburgh, our current proprietor Vicki Fraser joined the family business in 2003, working alongside her father Ian to open our Dingwall branch in 2013. As the first female funeral director in the Highlands, Vicki has renovated and expanded the Chapel Street funeral home in Inverness and introduced the Highlands’ first ever fleet of silver hearses and limousines. She also added a touch of Fraser tartan into staff uniforms and brought the business up to date with an online and social media presence.
As part of her renovations, Vicki installed the Highlands’ first multi-media system into the Inverness Service Room, allowing families and friends from afar to attend and participate in online funeral services, long before the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic made that commonplace. We now proudly have four qualified funeral director and embalmers, with a trainee soon to join our ranks, all supported by a dedicated family of funeral assistants, memorial craftsmen, admin and office staff, and more.
The 11 years Vicki and Ian had working side by side before his passing in 2014 were precious times for both father and daughter, and it is a privilege for Vicki to continue the family business as the fourth generation of the Fraser family.

A week on Saturday Team JFS will be cycling 140 miles to raise much-needed funds for MFR Cash for Kids North Scotland.
We’ll leave our Chapel Street premises at dawn, and relay into the heart of Ross-shire, with Garve, Achnasheen, Torridon, Shieldaig and Lochcarron all on our circular route. The hills we’ll climb already exceed the height of Ben Nevis, so we’re skipping the Bealach na Ba!
The miles and climbs will push us way out of our comfort zone so your support for this amazing local charity will keep us going, especially as there’s bound to be a headwind all the way.
If you can help us to support local children, here’s the link for donations. Thank you!
