What KT Made Next

Hand made items for the home and garden mainly using engraved glass, slate or a variety of hardwoods Everything is designed and hand made by me. Just ask.

Like most of us, I have become increasingly aware of the waste that goes on all around us. So, rather than create more, I decided to try to use as many recycled, re-used or rescued materials as I can to make beautiful, practical things for around the house and garden. Sometimes that means re-using bottles to create decorative lights. Sometimes I may use off cuts of glass that would otherwise be go

I do love a butterfly! The smaller bottle (only around 16cm tall) makes the lights appear very bright.

I am lucky to live in an area where so much Pictish art survives. The main figure on this light is based on the "beast" carved on the Maiden Stone at the foot of Bennachie. The mirror also appears on that stone while the v-rod and crescent is inspired by the Brandsbut stone in Inverurie. I have to confess, I made up the Ogham script on the right hand side. Simply a transliteration of "home".

K9 optical crystal paperweight. Although referred to as crystal, with only a 7% lead content this is perhaps more accurately a crown glass. Still, it engraved beautifully and the high refractive index gives a brilliant bright image.

Old scraps of glass are great for practicing techniques. Quite liking this way of showing trees in leaf.

I have to thank a lovely customer from Ballater who suggested daffodils could look good on this one.

Next craft fair is at Ballater on the 29th. Really hoping I have judged the prospective customers correctly.

Sometimes people ask me for a particular subject, and I will usually try to oblige. Sparrows and puffins seem to be popular just now.

The Cabinetmakers of Lethenty are taking a bit of a Christmas break and we’ll be back on duty on Wednesday the 4th of January.

Thank you to all our staff, suppliers and most of all, to our lovely clients.

2022 has been our busiest year to date and we have a stack of great new projects to get stuck into when we return.

To end the year, we thought we’d share this image of a memorial cross we made for some very special clients in the Oldest Hoose in Toon.

This particular project was a real collaborative effort between five of the main contractors and was presented as a gift to thank our clients and to mark the quincentennial of their home – that’s 500 years old by the way.

Stained glass artisan Gordon Watt created the central roundel featuring the river Don.

Traditional blacksmith Peter Gillan hand wrought the two iron rings.

The block of Kemnay granite was supplied by Graeme Cheyne builders.

Stonemasons Harper & Allan cut the block to shape and carved the letter W.

Design by Lethenty Cabinetmakers who made the timber cross from solid Aberdeenshire Oak and carved the lettering.

The whole project was conceived and co-ordinated by architect Dave Chouman.

Have a safe and peaceful Christmas everyone.

Here’s to more of the same in 2023!

I hate to mention the "C" word, but it is definitely coming. For something a little different, these acrylic shapes can be engraved with the names or greetings of your choice. All the shapes are around 7.5 cm at the widest point (and don't worry, the opaque looking ones just have their protective film on still). I have a few of each shape available and can engrave them for you at a cost of just £4.00 each (plus p&p if they have to be sent to you). Drop me a message if you would like any.

I won't be at this one, but lots of extremely talented and creative crafters will be.
