JET Wood Turning

The Greenhouse conversion is nearly finished. Windows to fit, maybe a flag and the interior. Then it’s over to the kids. Next project is the Guinea pig pen and then onto finishing the rejig of the workshop…. …..then we get back to turning. Rings, pens, bottle stoppers and some bowls.

Well the kids wanted a playhouse. The greenhouse hasn’t been used this year so it’s been moved and converted. Nestled between the Apple and Pear trees.

***Pens pens pens***
I’ve turned a fair few pens recently. And also been on the look out for some weird and wonderful pen blanks. These have topped the list recently, these are purple Juniper blanks and will make some stunning pens.

A yew bowl turned last week. Finished with friction polish for a mirror finish. This will be available in the next few weeks. If your interested DM. 🇬🇧

This week has been pen turning week. These two have been ordered as gifts for teachers.

A few photos showing the steps to turning a pen
1. Cut, drill and glue the brass tubes into the blanks.
2. Turn the blank down to size
3. Sand, sand, sand and sand some more, from 120 to 12000 grit.
4. Apply a friction polish finish (forgot to photograph this step).
5. Assemble the pen.

It’s finished. The Mulberry bowl has been drowned in mineral oil and is drip drying off. It’s colour and figure has shown up better than I thought. 🇬🇧

Have you ever owned something you really want to use, but if you do you may never get the chance again.

This Mortar is made from Mulberry. Which doesn’t normally grow into a standard tree.

I was given a ring a few years ago, which was split and sealed, and I decided to turn half. I’m still to pick a timber for the pestle.

There is some lovely figure in the bowl from the bird growing, this changes the growth of the grain into swirls and patterns.

I think it’s turned out fairly well, what do you think?

So I’ve got some lovey bits of Flaming Box Elder to be stabilised in the next few months ready to be turned into pens and bottle openers.

This stuff doesn’t come up very often and really happy to have managed to snaffle some. Keep. Look out for the finished items.

Who likes chopping boards? These are a few that I’ve made over the last year.

As a farmer and wood turner. I love being out in the countryside. The farm I work on has an amazing amount of rare flora and fauna. Orchids are a particular interest to me and here a couple of photos to showcase, Common spotted Orchids and Common Twayblade 🇬🇧
