We recently completed this raised planter for a repeat customer in Barton Seagrave.

The planter was constructed using green treated timber with posts set into the ground to make it extra sturdy! The internal walls were lined with polythene as a moisture barrier & we then filled the planter with a blend of topsoil, compost & sharp sand that’s perfect for planting!

For raised planters, or any other landscaping works, give Urbascape a call.

The garden was a blank canvas to begin with and the customer asked us to install a seating area featuring porcelain paving, timber pergola and bespoke timber bench, along with a veg patch and gravel path.

The result is a fantastic garden for the customers to enjoy, and once the electrician has been to install the pergola festoon lighting & bench strip lights this will be a great space where they can enjoy the long summer nights.

Pergolas, with their timeless charm and versatile design, have become a staple in enhancing outdoor spaces. When strategically placed in a garden, pergolas can go beyond mere aesthetics, adding significant value and functionality. In this article, Urbascape explore the ways in which pergolas can improve your garden.

Aesthetic Appeal: Creating a Focal Point
Pergolas serve as elegant structures that naturally draw the eye. By installing a pergola in your garden, you instantly create a focal point that adds visual interest and enhances the overall aesthetics of the space. Whether you opt for a classic wooden design or a more modern structure, a pergola can become the defining feature that elevates your garden's appeal.

Shade and Comfort: An Oasis in the Sun
One of the most practical benefits of pergolas in a garden is the provision of shade. The open-roof design, often complemented with lattice or slats, allows filtered sunlight to pe*****te while providing a comfortable space to escape the direct rays. This creates an oasis where you can relax, entertain, or enjoy a quiet moment surrounded by the beauty of your garden.

Outdoor Living Space: Extending Your Home
Pergolas effectively blur the lines between indoor and outdoor living. With the addition of comfortable seating, outdoor furniture, or even an outdoor kitchen, your pergola becomes an extension of your home. This transformed space encourages outdoor activities, from family gatherings to intimate dinners, making your garden a functional part of your living area.

Vertical Gardening: Greening Up Your Space
Pergolas offer a vertical canvas that can be utilized for gardening purposes. Vines, climbing plants, and hanging baskets can be incorporated to create a lush green environment. This not only adds a touch of nature to your garden but also maximises the use of space, turning the pergola into a living, breathing element of your landscape.

Increased Property Value: Investment in Outdoor Elegance
Beyond personal enjoyment, the addition of a pergola can contribute to the overall value of your property. Potential buyers are often drawn to well-designed outdoor spaces, and a thoughtfully crafted pergola can be a significant selling point.

Seasonal Adaptability: Enjoying Your Garden Year-Round
Pergolas are designed to be enjoyed in every season. With the addition of drapes, curtains, or outdoor heaters, your pergola can be adapted to different weather conditions. This means you can relish the beauty of your garden throughout the year, whether it's basking in the warmth of summer or cosying up on a crisp autumn evening.

From providing shade to creating a focal point, a well-designed pergola has the power to improve your garden in ways that extend far beyond the visual, offering an enhanced lifestyle and a deeper connection with nature.

Having completed a number of garden office and garden room projects over the last 12 months, Urbascape look into why people choose to have one built in the first place……

Having a garden office or garden room offers a multitude of benefits, ranging from improved work-life balance to enhanced well-being and increased property value. Here are some compelling reasons to consider having a garden office or garden room.

Work-Life Balance:
Separation of Work and Home: A garden office provides a physical separation between your professional and personal life, helping establish clear boundaries and maintain a healthier work-life balance.

Tranquil Working Environment:
Nature Connection: Working in a garden office allows you to connect with nature. Surrounded by greenery, fresh air, and natural light, you create a serene and inspiring workspace that fosters focus and creativity.

Increased Productivity:
Reduced Distractions: Garden offices are typically quieter and offer fewer distractions than indoor spaces. This can lead to increased productivity and a more conducive environment for concentrated work.

Flexibility and Adaptability:
Versatile Use: Garden rooms are versatile and can serve various purposes. In addition to being a home office, they can be used as art studios, workout spaces, or quiet retreats, providing flexibility to adapt to changing needs.

Property Value Enhancement:
Desirability: Well-designed garden offices and rooms enhance the overall appeal and desirability of your property. The additional functional space contributes positively to the property's market value.

Health and Well-Being:
Natural Light Exposure: Exposure to natural light is known to improve mood and well-being. Garden offices, with their large windows and glass doors, provide ample natural light, creating a healthier and more enjoyable work environment.

Reduced Commuting Stress:
Commute Elimination: Working from a garden office eliminates the stress of commuting. This time-saving aspect contributes to a more relaxed start and end to your workday, positively impacting your overall well-being.

Customisation and Personalisation:
Design Freedom: Garden offices offer the freedom to customise and personalise your workspace. You can choose the design, layout, and decor elements to create a space that resonates with your preferences and work style.

Environmental Sustainability:
Eco-Friendly Options: Many garden offices are designed with eco-friendly materials and sustainable features.

Cost-Efficient Alternative:
Cost Savings: Building a garden office can be a cost-efficient alternative to home extensions or renting external office space. It offers a dedicated workspace without the financial burden associated with larger construction projects.

Whether used for work or leisure, these structures contribute to a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle, making them a valuable addition to any home.

Exploring the differences between Hard Landscaping and Soft Landscaping

Hard landscaping involves the structural and non-living elements such as patios, pathways, and walls, while soft landscaping encompasses the living elements like plants, trees, and flowers. Together, they form the backbone of outdoor spaces.....

Hard Landscaping: The Architectural Framework -

Defining Spaces:
Hard landscaping provides the structure for outdoor areas. Patios, decks, and pathways define spaces, creating functional zones for relaxation, entertainment, and movement.

Materials and Texture:
The choice of materials in hard landscaping, such as stone, concrete, or wood, introduces texture and visual interest. Whether it's the smooth surface of a patio or the rugged charm of a stone wall, these elements contribute to the overall design aesthetic.

Water Features, Architectural Features and Lighting:
Water features, such as fountains or ponds, and outdoor lighting fixtures add ambiance and extend the usability of outdoor spaces into the evening. Architectural features like pergolas, gazebos, and retaining walls fall under the umbrella of hard landscaping and add character as well as visual appeal.

Soft Landscaping: The Living Canvas -

Natural Beauty:
Soft landscaping brings nature's beauty into the outdoor environment. Plants, trees, and flowers soften the hardscape, adding colour, fragrance, and a sense of natural serenity to the landscape.

Seasonal Changes:
Unlike the permanence of hard landscaping, soft landscaping undergoes seasonal changes. Blooms, foliage, and growth patterns evolve, creating a living canvas that transforms in line with the seasons.

Ecological Balance:
Soft landscaping contributes to ecological balance. Native plants, pollinator-friendly flowers, and well-designed green spaces support biodiversity, providing habitats for insects, birds, and other wildlife.

Inspiring Examples of Harmonious Designs -

Japanese Zen Garden:
Explore the serene beauty of a Japanese Zen garden where carefully placed rocks (hard landscaping) coexist with meticulously pruned trees, moss, and raked gravel (soft landscaping), creating a harmonious sanctuary.

Mediterranean Courtyard:
Immerse yourself in the warmth of a Mediterranean courtyard where terracotta tiles (hard landscaping) lead to lush flower beds, citrus trees, and climbing vines (soft landscaping), evoking a sense of relaxation and natural beauty.

English Cottage Garden:
Experience the charm of an English cottage garden where cobblestone paths (hard landscaping) wind through an exuberant display of flowering perennials, roses, and cottage-style plants (soft landscaping), creating an enchanting and romantic atmosphere.

By incorporating both hard landscaping and soft landscaping, outdoor spaces come to life with a vibrant energy. Each element plays a unique role. Hard landscaping provides structure and form, while soft landscaping infuses colour, texture, and life.

Crafting Natural Sanctuaries: A Guide to Thoughtful Garden Design

Gardens are not merely patches of greenery; they are living canvases that evolve with the changing seasons, offering solace, beauty, and a connection to nature......

Designing a garden is an art that goes beyond planting flowers and trees. It involves creating a space that reflects your personality and aligns with your lifestyle. A professional garden design service is a worthwhile investment if you are lacking knowledge in this area.

Understanding Your Garden: A Canvas of Possibilities -

Site Analysis:
Conduct a thorough analysis of your garden space. Consider factors such as sunlight exposure, soil quality, drainage, and existing features.

Purpose and Theme:
Define the purpose of your garden. Whether you seek a vibrant floral display, a serene meditation space, or a productive vegetable garden, having a clear theme will shape the overall design and plant selection.

Elements of Garden Design: Creating a Harmonious Landscape -

Layout and Structure:
Plan the layout of your garden, incorporating pathways, focal points, and functional areas. Define the structure with elements like archways, pergolas, or trellises, creating a framework for the overall design.

Colour, Texture and Layers:
Introduce colour and texture through a variety of plants, hardscape materials, and garden accessories. Layering plants of different heights and shapes adds depth and creates a dynamic, evolving landscape.

Plant Selection: Nurturing Life in Your Garden -

Seasonal Interest:
Choose plants that provide interest across the seasons. A mix of evergreen and deciduous plants, along with those that bloom at different times, ensures your garden remains visually appealing throughout the year.

Edible Gardens:
Consider integrating edible plants into your garden design. Herb gardens, fruit trees, and vegetable patches not only offer a source of fresh produce but also add functional and aesthetic value to the landscape.

Hardscape Features: Adding Structure and Functionality -

Paths and Seating Areas:
Design pathways that guide visitors through the garden. Materials such as gravel, stone, or pavers can be used to create both functional and visually appealing walkways.
Incorporate seating areas strategically placed for relaxation or socialising. Whether it's a bench beneath a shade tree, a cozy nook, or a full outdoor dining space, seating enhances the usability of your garden.

Lighting:
Extend the enjoyment of your garden into the evening with well-placed lighting. Illuminate pathways, highlight key features, and create a magical ambiance with outdoor lighting.

By combining an understanding of your garden's unique characteristics with thoughtful design principles, you can create a space that not only adds beauty to your home but also becomes a source of joy, relaxation, and connection with nature.
