"I'm Hoping to change the way we care for our feet"

My blisters from the Yorkshire 3 peaks 🥾🥾

I had worn my boots 100s of times before without any complaint. However, I changed two things the day before this event that drastically changed the dynamics of my hike. I changed the insoles which lifted my foot just slightly higher than my boot was used too. And bought myself a pair of fancy walking socks, a brand I had not used before, a wool material too dry for my skin creating this friction burn style blister.

Have a read ⬇️ on how to prevent this sort of thing happening to you.

Preventing friction blisters on your feet involves a combination of proper footwear, foot care, and protective measures.

Proper Footwear
•Choose the right shoes: Ensure that your shoes fit well. Neither too tight nor too loose. There should be enough room for your toes to move freely.
•Break in new shoes: Gradually wear new shoes to allow them to conform to the shape of your feet. For hiking especially you need to brake these in before a long hike.
• Wear the right socks. Opt for moisture wicking socks made of synthetic materials or wool blends. Avoid cotton as they retain moisture.
•Double layer socks. Consider wearing double-layer socks designed to reduce friction.

* Sock recommendations for hiking are mainly based on army recruit studies where by it’s been shown wearing two pairs of socks prevents blisters. A thin pair of polyester material and a thick woollen or polypropylene pair, this ensures low friction against the skin.

Foot care
• keep feet dry. Moisture can increase friction. Use foot powders or antiperspirants sprays to keep feet dry.
•Moisturise regularly. Apply a moisturiser cream to keep skin supple and less prone to friction. * please not do not apply moisturiser before going for a hike this is in your daily routine of self care*
•Trim toenails. Keep your toenails trim to prevent them from catching on your socks or shoes. Long toenails on a hike will knock on your walking boot and create trauma to the nail.

Protective measures
• Use blister pads to prevent blisters on prone areas. Use specially designed ones such as compeed.
•Lubricants: such as specialised blister prevention balm to high friction areas.
•Taping: use athletic tape or blister prevention tape to areas susceptible to blisters. The material must have a high coefficient of friction.

Activity management
• change socks regularly. If your feet get wet or sweaty, change into dry socks as soon as possible
•Take breaks: During prolonged walking or hiking, take regular breaks to remove shoes and air out your feet.
- Gradually increase activity. Increase the intensity and duration of activities like running or hiking gradually to allow your feet to adapt.

By following these steps you can significantly reduce the risk of developing friction blisters on your feet 👣

Hiii guys!!

We have been very quiet on socials this year. But trust me when I say we’ve been working hard behind the scenes. In & out of clinic. We welcomed Becky in December and she’s fit in perfectly. The 3 of us attended event in Leeds recently keeping us up to date in various aspects of foot heath.

With summer coming many of you are getting sandal feet ready and it’s so nice to catch up with our seasonal patients 🌞 ☀️

With that said it’s a very busy season so be sure to make appointments early before your holiday is due.

We look forward to seeing you

By Poppy age 10, my lovely little patient. Thank you for this wonderful poem Pops, it brightened up my day
👣 🌟

“ My poem about feet

Always was your feet
You do it 7times a week
They are not cheap
So they are to keep

Don’t get verrucas
Because they spread
And they spread like party poopers
Always wash your feet
Please do it 7 times a week”
