Home Kong street food in Leeds 🇭🇰

Ordered this nice dinner yesterday from who only launched their business a few days ago but thanks to .hong.kong.girl for finding them right away.

It does look like there isn’t much food in the pictures but believe me we couldn’t finish what we ordered between the two of us.

Hong Kong street food platter (£13.95) that comes with:
4x Sui Mai. Absolutely delicious! Always a favourite!

4x HarGow: like glass dumplings. Tasty.

4x Radish cakes. So delicious and they were perfect with the hoisin sauce (that was a bit salty for my liking but didn’t mind it at all tbh).

2x sticky rice cake: these are my new most favourite thing. They’re very floppy and sticky but I absolutely loved them. (The man wasn’t sure about it lol).

4x Tikuwa: thought this was squid bc they had the same rubbery texture and a fishy taste but apparently they’re sort of like a fish paste mixed with salt, sugar, starch, MSG & egg whites. Not sure I liked this one very much. Apparently, they’re a marmite thing even over there.

4x Fired tofu: I’m not a big tofu fan so these are as god as they can ever be tbh...

Mini curry platter (2.95). Comes with:

2x meaty samosas
Both were extremely delicious. Perfect crisp and beautiful fillings!

3xFried radish. (£3.95) Another absolute favourite for me! Crispy from the outside. Nice size and just so delicious. The man thought they were dry but I mean, dip them in the sauce, duh! I accepted no criticism to this one!

🥟 We ordered 4x more Sui Mai (2.95) bc we knew we like it and I’m glad we did. They had a nice smoky flavour (chef’s kiss).

Spicy garlic fried vermicelli (£4.95)
Glass noodles that were a bit hard to eat bc they’re all sticking together and it was hard to separate. Think I should’ve used scissors with it (not being funny) but we managed. The prawns were tiny but they actually tasted soooo good!

🚗 It was delivered within an hour for only £2. And we got some complimentary ice tea which was nice and cold!

This was a fun experiment for us bc we are ignorant about Hong Kong street food. Really enjoyed. Would order again!

journey - The story behind Home Kong Street Food:
Originally, we have never planned on starting a takeaway, it was just during the start of lockdown where we began cooking a lot of Hong Kong styles foods and dishes, and during the new year’s, we’ve managed to make out self our own radish cake and rice cake (Nian Gao). Suddenly, we had an thought, “what if we took this out and sell it?” Since there is also people like me that are homesick, they get to have a bite of food that feels like home away from home, and can also provide a spiritual comfort to their soul. So on the valentines’s day of 2021, Home Kong Street Food was born.

This is one of Hong Kong’s most special part of their culture, it is frequented by many locals, and is also loved by many tourists alike. It is considered by many to be part of our everyday lives. Hong Kong people’s choice for eating in a restaurant are very simple, their lives are often very fast paced and busy so they would want a fast meal whilst having a wide variety to choose from. Aside form the food being cheap there is also a large menu the could choose from, they are also often established near homes and apartments, this also allows local residents to familiarize themselves with the restaurant owners, it is it’s most important feature and would often have televisions situated around the restaurant for people to watch. Either to catch the news or for general entertainment after a long day of work.

I’d seen a few reviews about (.hong.kong.girl ) so I knew we had to give them a go!!

I couldn’t decide what to have so we went a little mad 😂

Fried gyoza
We had both the fried chicken&veg and beef&pork Gyoza. Both were so good and packed full with filling!

Most of these I’ve never tried before. I loved the Hargow... reminded me of wonton soup! The radish cake strangely enough didn’t do much for me warm but I loved it cold! And the sticky rice cake I couldn’t stop eating even though I couldn’t make my mind up what I thought... I even ate my hubby’s piece as he was full 😂. All in all I quite enjoyed grazing on everything... even the tofu which I don’t normally like!!

I actually quite liked these but were nothing like I expected.

Today we talk about Dai pai d**g  #大牌檔 are a type of open-air food stall. The term originates from Hong Kongbut has been adopted outside Hong Kong as well.The official government name for these establishments is "cooked-food stalls". The more common name, dai pai d**g, literally means "big licence stall" in Cantonese, referring to the stalls' license plates, which are larger than those of other licensed street vendors.

In the late 20th century, the Hong Kong government decided to restrict the operation and license of dai pai d**g in order to remove them from public streets. Some were relocated into indoor cooked food markets built by the government.After the decline of dai pai d**g from the 1970s, most of them no longer operate within the family but through sole proprietorship or partnership instead.

According to the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, there are only 25 dai pai d**g remaining in Hong Kong. As a valuable touchstone of Hong Kong heritage and culture, the word dai pai d**g was recognized by the Oxford English Dictionary in March 2016.

Servin’ up street food as if it was bought straight off the streets in HK, @homekongstreetfood aim to bring authentic, fresh Hong Kong style street food into the homes and mouths of Leeds’ foodies 👏🏽 Definitely a huge gap in the market for this in Leeds, as I was saying to my sister the other day that I miss authentic HK food like crazy. I didn’t know where to start (I wanted it ALL after seeing their menu) so I ordered the Home Kong street food platter; featuring some of HK’s most notorious street food snacks - siu mai (pork & prawn dumplings), har gow (prawn dumplings), tikuwa (a grilled fish style skewer), lo bak go/turnip (my fave dim sum of ALL TIME), crispy tofu, cheung fun (rice rolls) and nin go (a sweet, sticky glutinous rice cake traditionally eaten at LNY) 🔥 It was delivered within the hour and the moment I lifted the lid off, I was instantly transported back to HK with all the smells. The textures and taste of everything were spot on - my stand outs were the siu mai (it’s made from scratch and was super juicy) the homemade lo bak go - perfectly crisp and SO tasty (it came with what I believe was a hoisin style sauce for dipping) and the tikuwa (if you like salty and sweet then it’s a must!) I was their very first customer and was so honoured to be the first one to taste their food; if you’re looking to try something new (and let’s face it - none of us are going to be going anytime soon) then DEFINITELY one to check out! They also do the most insane looking celebration cakes which I’ve got my eye on 🌝 Also; just the sweetest couple ever with the best customer service 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Hit me up for any recommendations as I’ll be more than happy to help with orders 🥰
