Every Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is different, standard/assessment plan, industry and training provider is different and as such the way in which they plan needs to be different.

Through our working with a variety of employers, we have noted that effective ILPs:

✅ Are learner-centric and developed through a strong relationship with the employer which creates a more individualised programme to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) to be successful in their apprenticeship and job role.

✅ Serve to drive quality, rather than it just being a document to satisfy either audit or inspection.

✅ Generated through a tripartite approach between the learner, employer and the provider is key to an outstanding apprenticeship programme. An ILP can become a worthless document without good communication and an effective relationship between all three.

How have you approached the creation of ILPs on your apprenticeship programme? Do they drive quality for your organisation or serve as a mere auditing tool?

Share your experience or best practice for ILPs in comments. 👇

In the UK alone, the spending power of disabled people and their families – is worth a staggering £274 billion and rises by 14% per year, yet less than 10% of organisations have a targeted plan to access the disability market.

Purple Tuesday is a UK-wide change programme for organisations of all sizes from all sectors to get involved in, with the common goal of improving the customer experience for disabled people 365 days a year.

Participating organisations make public commitments (a minimum of one new activity or initiative) to ensure sustainable changes are made. For organisations, this will result in the opening up of products and services to the disability market.

How can we, as educators, take part?

Simply, we should ensure that our elearning design and learning materials cater for a diverse range of potential users' needs, and talk to learners about reasonable adjustments that will enable them to have a complete experience of our training programmes.

If you’re just beginning to explore alternative learning, or are looking for facts and figures to make your case for a personalised educational pursuit, meet the late, great Sir Ken Robinson.

Robinson identified the flaws of an education system that treats all students as though they’re interchangeable, offering minimal variation in course material or instructional style.

Refreshingly, he didn’t just define a problem and point fingers at the sources: He offered excellent suggestions for alternatives.

In 2006, Sir Ken Robinson delivered a TED talk on individualised learning, proposing that schools kill creativity by offering a uniform learning experience.

After more than 14 million views, he followed it up with another popular presentation on the learning revolution, focused on the economic value and necessity of developing individual talent. Robinson proposed that this meaningful pursuit should be the focus of education.

Sadly, Ken passed away in August 2020 but his educational legacy lives on.
