The back end of this year I have been teaching myself film photography with a bit of help from YouTube and a lot of trial and error.

To date I've only processed black and white but I have now shot a few rolls of colour film which I'm really looking forward to seeing once they are developed.

I was never keen on the film thing but tried it due to acquiring a 1973 camera from my dad and then just giving it a go. I love how much it slows me down and makes me consider a scene before hitting the shutter.

I'm a long way off getting the images I want from it but I am loving the process, which is the main thing really. A man who enjoys walking and all that.

Not been out with the camera for what feels like ages due to life getting in the way of stuff.

This morning while my little girl was brushing her teeth the light from the rising sun was creeping in so I couldn't resist grabbing a shot of her in that moment.

After a storm comes the light

Fuming about the di****ad who has cut this stunning tree down last night.

Sycamore Gap was a world renowned location for people coming to visit northern England and it has now been lost to history due to some pathetic little prick deciding he would take a chainsaw to it.

I will be forever grateful to Lee from Elements Photography for pointing me in this direction a couple of years back that enabled me to see this beauty and to point my camera at it.

Scotland July trip.

Mountains, Glens, Waterfalls, Lochs, Beaches, Forests........ And a billion midges 😂

A walk along Brean Down last week for sunset.

This little peninsula to the south of Weston-Super-Mare is a great little walk with some lovely views.

Out to sea you have the 2 small islands, Flat Holm & Steep Holm. On the peninsula, the trees all grow inland due to the constant high winds that batter it from the west, something I've never seen before.

At the western end of the walk, there is an old fort that is surprisingly well kept to say the time it has been there and the weather that comes through this area. The fort is not very photogenic hence no photos, but it is well worth an explore.

Join me on an early morning walk around Staveley Nature Reserve last Thursday.

It was a very early 04:30 start to get to Staveley for sunrise.

I parked in the car park, grabbed my boots and coat and off I went with no real plans, just take the camera and walk. I knew that with it being a nature reserve, there may be the opportunity to photograph some birds, not that I know what any of them are...... But within 5 minutes, I spotted an owl hunting in the adjacent field so I popped on the long lens and fired a few frames off. It was still very dark and with a 2x extender the shot of the owl was a massive challenge at 800mm.

After that I went back to the 24-70mm and just tried to capture some of the ambiance from this new location to me. It was lovely to see the mist on the lakes and the summer colours with the wild flowers in bloom and the fields full of crops along part of the circular walk.

Would I recommend this place...... Yes, I will be venturing back again at various times of the year to observe and capture the changing environment with the changing seasons.

A few shots from my trip last week to the south coast.

I found myself in Portsmouth last week after heading south from Yorkshire. I'd never visited Portsmouth before and it was lovely to dip my feet in the (strangely warm) English channel whilst looking for good photo opportunities.

I didn't realise I met a local celebrity when I met this friendly young fella whilst visiting Torridon in early May.

Apparently, his name is Callum and he was not one bit shy. I believe the locals take soft veggies up to the car park in the Glen for him as he has no teeth due to his impressive age of 17. This would explain the lack of shyness.

I've seen recent photographs of him this week and his antlers have really grown which is great to see.

The summit of the mountain was covered in cloud for the full morning and was still present as I left but a lovely hike below the cloud base where I found this lovely waterfall.

Reaching out

I love a woodland but have always been crap at capturing how it feels in real life. The chaos is overwhelming. This old tree at the ancient hillfort of Woodbury Castle really stood out to me as another shower came in and I took shelter.

The light hitting the branch reaching out to me with the lichen covering appeals to me.

This tree sits atop the outer bank of the moat of the hillfort with the larger, inner bank visible in the near distance. Both these along with the moat (if it is called a moat on an iron age hillfort) were there to protect the large village within. A lovely walk with a lot of history.
