👉🏼 Positional head deformity (Positional plagiocephaly)

A common condition we see in babies, particularly in their first 6 months of life. It often occurs as a result of imbalances in the muscles of the neck and shoulders due to birth trauma or intrauterine constraint. This then causes the infant to favour sleeping with their head rotated to one side and at a time when their skulls are still forming, this can affect the head shape resulting in:
➡️ a flattened area of the head at the back
➡️ prominent forehead on one side
➡️ prominent cheekbone on one side
➡️ uneven ear height

These babies often present as unsettled, restless babies who don’t like to be put down on their backs and some may also struggle with breastfeeding due to their inability to rotate and latch effectively.

As Chiropractors we assess and treat these musculoskeletal imbalances using gentle, safe and effective treatments specific for babies. By restoring the normal movement and balance, the head shape is naturally corrected whilst the babies head is still adaptable.

WORKING FROM HOME? 💻 Use these four simple tips to improve your set up, trust me your neck and back will thank you 🙏🏻

1️⃣Screen at eye level/use a monitor
Find a way to raise your laptop so that the screen is at eye level – whether it’s a pile of books, a recipe stand or a cardboard box it really doesn’t matter how!
This allows you to hold your head directly over your neck meaning the weight of your head (4-5kg on average!) is distributed straight down your spine.
If your head is even a few cm in front of your body the musculature at the back of the neck and upper back have to work much harder which can result in muscle aches, stiffness and tension type headaches after a long day of work!

2️⃣Separate keyboard
If your screen is raised you’ll need a separate keyboard – this will avoid you reaching forwards and rounding through the shoulders when typing.

3️⃣Separate mouse
A separate mouse allows you to keep the shoulders and upper back in a neutral position without having to twist or reach across to use a trackpad.

4️⃣Chair
Some workplaces are offering support for their homeworkers so enquire as to whether you can purchase one or even borrow one from the workplace. If not use any chair but add pillows to prop yourself up so your elbows are roughly at 90 degrees and your low back is supported allowing you to sit upright. Your feet should be flat on the ground so you may need to add a footrest or riser, a pile of books or folder works well.

With all of this in mind the number one thing to remember whether you’re at home or in the office – MOVEMENT IS KEY! 🔑However perfect your set up may be, sitting in one position for 3-4 hours at a time has negative effects on your musculoskeletal system ❌ So move every 1 hour and plan breaks in to your day 🚶🏼‍♀️

Chiropractic during pregnancy 🤰🏼

As you can see, we are very well equipped to help our pregnant patients who are in need of chiropractic care. This pillow is designed to allow pregnant ladies to enjoy lying on their front whilst receiving their treatment – something we know is very much appreciated after many months of having a bump!🙏🏻

During pregnancy the female body goes through countless changes to create the best possible environment for a growing baby. However, these changes and differing hormone levels can affect how the body functions. One example of this is an increase in the hormone relaxin which is released to prepare the body for birth by relaxing the ligaments of the pelvis and low back. Unfortunately these change plus the increased weight and change to postures can cause musculoskeletal aches and pains and can sometimes lead to a condition called pelvic girdle dysfunction (PGD/SPD)‼️

As chiropractors we assess for these imbalances and provide hands on treatment to help improve function and reduce pain. Often this involves gentle manual therapies and hands on muscle release to correct the dysfunctions and create balance within the pelvis, spine and soft tissues. We may also advise specific lifestyle changes and give exercises to help prevent the condition from worsening and prevent it reoccurring.💆🏼‍♀️
If you’re pregnant and wandering whether chiropractic may be helpful for you then feel free to send me a message with any queries you may have ✅

IT’S OFFICIAL! 🎉
After months of working between two clinics (and all the travel between them every day) I’ve made the decision to move full time to Crossgates Chiropractic Clinic from February, where I currently work part time. I decided I had to put my work life balance first because I’m the first to preach that we should all ‘work to live, not live to work’!
This change will mean I have lots more availability at Crossgates for my existing patients there who I know often struggle to get an appointment. If you have any friends or family who would like to book in as new patients then this would also be a great time to do it! ✅
You can now book online via our website or just give our lovely receptionists a call on 01132600794 ☎️

Fibromyalgia Likely a Response to Nerve-Sensitizing Antibodies 09/09/2021

Interesting new research into the potential causes of fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia Likely a Response to Nerve-Sensitizing Antibodies Research shows that many of the symptoms of fibromyalgia syndrome are caused by antibodies that increase the activity of pain-sensing nerves throughout the body.
