Thought of the Day: Stress and Pain

In support of stress awareness month in April, our chiropractor, Amelia is sharing her thoughts on stress, the correlations with pain.

"If we get an ulcer or bad skin, we automatically put it down to - ‘I’m run down’, ‘I’ve been really stressed’ or ‘I haven’t eaten well’. Therefore the obvious fix is to try and eat better, drink more, do more exercise and reduce stress. 🥦💦🏃🏼‍♀‍

Yet when we suffer with back pain, patients are always asking - ‘What caused this pain?’ ‘There was no injury or accident?’ ‘Why has it flared up again?’

The spine is no different to any other part of the body - it is directly affected by the way we live our lives from the amount of daily movement we do, the fuel we put into our body, the amount of water we drink and how we look after our mental health. For example, emotional stress and anxiety has a direct effect on the levels of hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline which have a direct effect on muscle tone and levels of inflammation in the body.

So next time you have a flare up or your back ‘goes’ start to think about your lifestyle and things which may be putting added stress on your body - how can we expect our bodies to function at their best if we don’t look after them?"

Broadgate Exercise Tips - Hip Flexor Stretch
Do you sit for long periods during the day? If you're regualrly working at a desk, at a checkout or in the car, you will definitely benefit from this hip flexor stretch demonstrated by our chiropractor, Simon. It's a great little exercise you can do daily after work that will help loosen the muscles that get tight when you are sitting all day.

Lisa Skiing
Can you spot her? How good is Lisa on the slopes! You might not recognise her all suited up but Lisa is a familiar face to many as one of our reception team and she's recently been enjoying blue skies and plenty of sun on the slopes of Austria. We're big fans of skiing here at Broadgate as it's a great cardiovascular exercise involving the whole body! Have you tried it before? Where would you recommend for a skiing holiday?
