For this week's we're spotlighting one of our TCS London Marathon runners, Andy McCourt 🎽

Over the next year, Andy will be participating in a series of challenging endurance events, including the London Marathon 2025, pushing his limits to support primary bone cancer patients.

His first event was last weekend, which Andy kicked off with the It's Grim Up North Running challenge in North Yorkshire.

"It was the hardest run I've ever done by quite a way. Tough terrain, but gorgeous scenery. Unfortunately, a cramp kicked in at some point in the third lap (of four) and didn't relent at all, resulting in me rather overdramatically collapsing to the ground after getting over the finish line.

The finish line photo is with my dad who is living with Chondrosarcoma. Despite this, he has still managed to make it with my mum and support. He's battling to enjoy every moment of life and I couldn't be more proud of him." - Andy McCourt

The next event for Andy is the Wasdale Horseshoe in August, travelling 16 miles up and over some of the highest peaks in England. Good luck Andy! We are all rooting for you 🧡

A big to Izzy Watts and her amazing community in Powys! 🧡🌟

Izzy was inspired to fundraise in support of a close work colleague whose grandson passed away at 14 from Ewing sarcoma.

"Nothing will inspire me more to continue on with my 100-mile attempt and raise what I can for Ewing sarcoma research."

She took on the gruelling The Epona 100 challenge, with an elevation gain of 17,000 ft over 100 miles, scaling 23 mountains in Wales. Izzy completed this unbelievably tough challenge in 39 hours and 13 minutes! 🏔️💪

Despite the mental and physical rollercoaster of taking on this event, with her longest race to date being 52 miles, Izzy pushed through. At the last checkpoint, she was ready to quit, but her husband and the checkpoint marshals encouraged her with food, coke and coffee, sending her on her way 😅

Izzy’s incredible effort and determination have raised a phenomenal £7,418 for vital research into Ewing sarcoma. Thank you, Izzy, for your amazing dedication and to your community for their support! 💛👏

“Once I recovered from surgery and proton beam therapy, I had to build up strength both physically and mentally. It took me longer than expected.” – Lori

After experiencing pain in her back which worsened over time, Lori was eventually diagnosed with spinal chordoma in July 2019.

Her treatment involved two 11-hour surgeries followed by proton beam therapy (PBT). When Lori returned home from treatment with no nurses, no routine and time to think, her mental health deteriorated.

Lori shares her story as part of our campaign this July to show why research into the psychological impact of primary bone cancer is so important 🧡

Cancer survivor reunited with life-saving London optician 23/07/2024

This Sarcoma Awareness Month, we’re celebrating an emotional reunion.

David, a chordoma patient, was put back in touch with the optician who started his life-saving journey thanks to the remarkable efforts of the BBC 🧡

After experiencing double vision in January 2020, David visited his local Specsavers for an eye exam and was urged to visit A&E the same day for further investigation.

With the quick action and diligence of his optician, doctors discovered a 23mm tumour near David’s cranial nerve, and his treatment started quickly.

David’s story is a reminder of the important role that healthcare professionals play in the diagnostic journey of primary bone cancer patients, and we are committed to working with opticians to raise awareness of the red-flag symptoms so that more patients survive and thrive.

This week’s goes to the incredible Bethany Barnes who completed her second 7.5 mile fundraising walk around Ennerdale Water this July, joined by around 70 friends and family members 🥾🧡

In December 2019, aged 22, Bethany was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Just one month later, she went on to complete her first fundraising walk, raising an amazing £4,700 and vital awareness along the way.

In the months that followed, Bethany had her hip, femur and knee replaced and received multiple rounds of chemotherapy. After completing her treatment, Bethany’s scans remained clear for three years. Devastatingly, in October 2023, Bethany was diagnosed with a recurrence of osteosarcoma in her hip and had no option but to have her leg and part of her pelvis removed.

When reflecting on her second Ennerdale Water walk, Bethany shared:

“I'd love to hopefully finish off my cancer journey this summer by doing the same walk I started with to raise more awareness and money for this amazing charity.”

We’d like to say a HUGE thank you to Bethany and all her supporters for raising an incredible £7,600 this summer and a phenomenal total of £12,300 across both walks. Your support means the absolute world to us ✨🧡

Our Story

In 2004, a group of families who had lost children and young people to primary bone cancer came together. They wanted to tackle head-on the fact that there was virtually no accessible bone cancer information, and practically no funding for research into this disease.

Determined not to accept the status quo, the families pooled funds they had already raised, and together with guidance from Professor Ian Lewis (Consultant Paediatrician and Adolescent Oncologist at St James's University Hospital, Leeds) the Bone Cancer Research Trust was registered in 2006.

The first research grants were awarded in autumn 2006. The charity's original logo was designed to show that two of the most common forms of primary bone cancer - osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma - tend to affect children and young people, and tend to start in the long bones of the arms and legs.

Today, the Bone Cancer Research Trust funds pioneering research into all forms of primary bone cancer and ensures that information and support are available for patients of all ages whilst raising national and international awareness of this devastating disease.
