☀️ As Summer approaches many of us head to the sea or places we can swim, 🏊♀️ but the temperature of the water can shock you! Children and young people need to be taught about the dangers of cold water shock as new figures show the number of young people drowning accidentally in the UK rose by almost a quarter last year. We can all remember the news stories of the teenagers who go off swimming somewhere (that maybe they shouldn't be) and the worst happens. 🆘 Cold water shock can affect breathing and movement - even among strong and confident swimmers - is one of the biggest causes of drowning. It can take hold when people enter or jump into cold seas, rivers, canals and lakes where temperatures can be as low as 15C in the summer – half that of typical swimming pools heated to 30C. 🆘 Cold water shock is the body’s automatic response and can be so severe – causing soaring heart rates, gasping for breath, hyperventilation and aspiration of water – that many, particularly those with underlying health conditions, die within minutes. 👉 If you fall into water, increase your chance of survival by fighting the instinct to swim and float instead for a minute or two - this will help regain control of your breathing while the effects of cold water shock pass, before trying to swim for safety or calling for help. 👉 Think before you leap. Let your body acclimatise by going in slowly. 👉 If you spot someone in danger in open water - do not enter the water to rescue them, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard! 🌅 Stay safe and have fun this summer! 🌅
