Happy New Year!!! 🎉

Thank you to everyone who has supported my business and this page this year, it means a lot to me. I started SerrantGreen as a creative outlet and its been so great to receive a lot of love and support for my illustrations - especially over the last year.

This year has been a big one for me personally, I started my Etsy shop, I bought a house, I got engaged and it’s all been really overwhelming in the best kind of way. I am still finding my feet with the shop and working out what works/sells and finding the balance between my digital and IRL life. I still haven’t got the hang of it and that’s okay, it’s all a bit trial and error.

hope you all have a great new year (no matter where you are)! 🎉 I am “stuck” at home with my partner this year, in our new house and our cats as we have covid! (It finally got us 🙃😩) but I’m also exactly where I’d want to be 🥰

And remember New Year’s Eve is always overrated! 😜

✨Deadline for orders is the 30th November! ✨

A personalised portrait is a perfect gift for yourself or a loved one. Portrait illustrations are digitally created and printed onto A4 230gsm matte photo paper.

All portraits are illustrated with a plain one colour background of your choice.

At an extra cost you can add interest to your artwork by either: selecting from the 'pre-made' plant additions or you can select the 'custom' plant additions option.

Once you order has been placed:

1. Please contact me via Etsy messenger and send over a clear photo that you would like me to use as reference for the illustration.

2. Please specify colours you’d like me to use for the clothing and background. If you have selected plant additions please specify which additions you’d like.

3. I will then go ahead and illustrate your portrait accordingly. I will send over a digital proof for your approval, if you require any tweaks or changes this can be made within 48 hours.

👋🏽 Hi There! 🌿

I am Helena, I’m the creator of Serrant-Green. I wanted to create content that celebrated the beauty of natural black women. At university I studied fashion design and in my final year I wrote my dissertation about the lack of representation of natural black women in media. My research was empowering to do but I was not shocked by what I discovered.

As black women we are held to the standards of white women. From a young age we are told by society that out hair is unruly, that we would look prettier with straighter hair. The media edits our pictures so we have lighter skin and Instagram filters narrow our noses. All of this and more makes us feel undesirable.

My message is that we are perfect in all shade, all hair types and we are worthy of taking up space. (And not apologise for it!) I want us to love our curls, coils and skin (…doesn’t mean I’m hating if you slap on that straight lace front wig but I want you to know you don’t NEED it! )

I want to inspire and empower little black girls (and even grown black women), letting them know they are beautiful as nature intended. 💪🏽💪🏾💪🏿

✨I will only be taking on 30 custom portraits before Christmas. Custom orders must be placed before the 30th November. All custom orders will be posted on the 15th December.

Non custom prints will also be available and orders on these will need to be placed before 15th December.

🌿 Inspired by .you earrings

✨Did you miss me? Gosh, it’s been a while! How’s everyone been?

I’m ready to get creative again, but in my own time. I’m learning to set boundaries and part of that is understanding where the boundaries lie. Life is starting to get back to “normal” but also so much in my life is still changing and it still feels like I’m juggling a lot. So, I can’t promise regular content, but I will create and upload when I feel like it.

Recently, I was inspired by a small business called .you , they create amazing handmade jewellery and have just released these earrings, along with some other flower power designs. As soon as I saw them, this image came to my mind, I had to incorporate them in a design! I hope you like my and I hope I did your earrings justice! I hope to create some more artwork inspired by small businesses.

🛍 I am going to be closing my Etsy for a few weeks as I have a few things in my life that I need to focus on at the moment. Sending you all positive vibes 🥰

I have decided to take a little break from posting on social media this month.

I have some new ideas/concepts that I would like to work on for Serrant-Green. I find with Instagram that there is quite a lot of pressure to constantly be creating and uploading new content. (Especially when you’re running a business too) because of this I find myself creating pieces just “for the gram” and algorithm. 🙄 I haven’t quite found the balance yet and that’s okay, I’m still working things out! ( I know a few other creators struggle with this too right now)

I am usually the kind of person that grinds until I burn out, so I’m quite proud of myself for slowly learning that it is not a healthy lifestyle to live. Or a sustainable one! Learning to listen to myself and remembering to take breaks when I need them.

🛍 The shop will still be open and I will still be available for custom portraits. I might post the occasional thing but just giving you guys a heads up in case anyone is wondering where I am at!

So, I’m taking a little break from posting, going to work out a good balance again and work on the exciting ideas I have. See you again in May with lots more ! 🥰

I have been so busy with custom portraits this month, which has been amazing! It makes me so happy to use my skills to bring people joy!

Here’s some of the ones I’ve done this month! If it’s for a special occasion or just because... a custom portrait makes a lovely gift! 🥰

Today marks 1 year since the UK went into Lockdown (the first time)! Crazy to to think this time last year we all thought life would back to normal by September (at the latest!)

But here we are... and we are finally starting to see a glimmer of hope! When I finally see my friends and family, I’m going to hug them soo hard, we are going to laugh, dance and all that good stuff we miss!!! Not long to wait now... hopefully! ☀️

Something a bit different from me today... I was an adult before I knew that ballet shoes were meant to be the same colour as your skin tone. They are an extension of the leg and so when you go on point (your tippy toes) it should look like you have extremely long elegant legs.

The other day I watched a video of a black female ballet dancer receive her first pair of brown ballet shoes. She was filled with so much joy and I was so happy she had been given that option. It was so lovely to see for me but the comments were just full of hate! “This is ridiculous” “this it out of control” “this is racist singling her out” etc etc...

It’s something so small but I remember when I use to do ballet, we would have to wear “skin coloured” tights for shows and me and the other brown skin girls would laugh because they looked so ridiculous on us! (at the time no where made our skin colour in tights and if they did they were not offered to us) We asked if we could wear no tights as this would look better but we’re often told “no, everyone needs to look the same” we even laugh about it now! (it’s been over 10 years 🤣) Having the upper half of your body be brown and your legs being white / “nude”🤣 How ridiculous is this comment? we don’t look the same though!?

But it doesn’t just end at tights and ballet shoes. Bras, underwear, Plasters... - last year Tesco introduced plasters in dark, medium and light. People complained and vowed never to shop at Tesco!

Anything you buy that is “skin coloured” is not always available in all skin tones. It’s small things that people take for granted that mean a lot to those that it is not available to.

✨ Anyways this one is for the little girls out there that just want to dance!

I’ve been having a bit of a art block the last few days. (I think was just overthinking it 😂) I thought I’d do a to get the creative juices flowing. Which was incredibly helpful! So this is my interpretation of

I’ve been trying out a few new techniques and brushed to add interest to my designs. I wanted to see what it would look like if I added depth to my illustrations as my usual style is flat/comic book style. I think it works on this one, I also love the textured background. I feel like this could make a nice a card!

Does anyone else feel like this sometimes? This is how I feel when I think about the pandemic.

I was so inspired by this concept by , I started by drawing this for and then ended up drawing two more illustrations around this idea of “heads in the clouds”. So this is part 1 of 3 💕 (stay tuned for the other two concepts) 🥰
