HM gov has issued new draft regulations on the use of toxic FR (fire retardant) chemicals in furniture. If implemented these would mean that most post 1950s chairs will end up in landfill rather than being reupholstered.

FR chemicals are unnecessary and incredibly toxic. They are so toxic we can no longer dispose of foam etc in landfill it must be burned releasing more co2 into the atmosphere. Yet our gov has decided they want to continue their use and even make things worse than they currently are when there are much better alternatives.

We are the only country that has these outdated regulations which if they become law will put many small upholsterers out of business.

The USA has adopted the ‘’smoulder test’’ without any increase in deaths from fires and therefore avoiding these toxic chemicals. We would like to adopt the same.

We have to act and voice our concerns before this legislation is implemented. The cut off date is 24.10.23.
