Can you be addicted to sound? Actually, yes. Despite our innate compulsion to meditate, we need sound as much as silence. Dutch sonographer Floris van Manen said that noise is “some sort of drug”. That’s why we can feel distinctly uneasy when confronted with silence, as over-exposure to the aural nerves is as addictive as chemical stimulants.

Anyone who has been to a concert will have noticed that as soon as the music dies down, people will start coughing. In fact, sound has a profound effect on our wellbeing, in both directions. It affects the heart-rhythm and blood pressure, our mood and our behaviour towards others. For example, loud noise can provoke higher levels of aggression, which is a tactic employed by the military to get results from soldiers.

Although that may not sound particularly positive, we all know that we can use music to induce states of calm and even euphoria, and the more you can do with sound, the more beneficial those effects can become. Spatialising enhances this beyond measure.
