In Bermondsey, we’re looking for someone to join our growing Wholesale Packing team.

VACHERIN MONT D’OR RETURNS

Right, we know we posted a few of these this time last year. But, they’re too juicy not to repost.

We’ve been working with Sancey Richard since 2009. However, these delightful photos from the archives are from the Vacherin makes of yesteryear in the late 90s.

They are, de facto, the best Vacherin Mont d’Or producers around and the only private, family-run producer left.

The key to their unrivaled flavour and unctuous texture is the pre-ripening of their milk, and a slower make.

I think the Mons team get more excited for Vacherin’s return than they do Christmas, as should you.

We’ve got them on a special opening weekend discount across our retail sites and online. Bag yours for £15.95.

If you know, you know. Available on our retail counters Saturday 28.09.

Look at it!!

We’ve got one of the best batches of St Nectaire for some weeks on the counter at our East Dulwich site. Podgy, yoghurty and tasting just like peas and asparagus, these wheels are exactly how we like them.

The team have already eaten half a wheel, we’ll have plenty more across our retail sites next week.

It’s back, and back in a big way. What a stonking batch of Kirkham’s Lancashire we have been enjoying on our counters this weekend.

25/12/2023

The Food Standards Agency have issued a recall on all Kirkhams Lancashire cheese purchased between the 1st of October & today, December 25th.

If you bought any Lancashire from us during this time, we kindly request that you do not consume it or let it come into contact with any other food in your home. Please contact us for a refund or replacement.

Whilst the recall is precautionary, it’s imperative for public health that government guidelines for disposal be followed. See FSA’s post for details on this.

Please ensure you do not eat any Kirkham’s Lancashire purchased through us until the matter is resolved.

We look forward to bringing you good news of the return to form of Graham’s fabulous cheese in the New Year.

Many thanks & a Happy Christmas to you all.

WE’RE GIVING AWAY 10 COPIES OF ‘THE CHEESE WHEEL’

Various Mons alumni have gone on to exciting careers elsewhere in the food world: setting up their own cheese shops, leading guided transhumance trips in the Biellese pre-Alps & cooking at some of our favourite restaurants, to name a few. But it’s not often we get to celebrate a former colleague & close friend becoming a published author. That author is Emma Young.

We say former colleague…. Alongside her work as a cheese consultant, Emma also now teaches courses in Cheese Retailing with Mons’ Training facility in France, so she hasn’t strayed far from the fold.

The Cheese Wheel is newly released this year. & Emma's first book is a perfect Christmas gift for the cheese lover in your life.

To celebrate, we're giving away 10 copies of Emma's book to the first 10 individuals to place an order for The Cheese Wheel Selection. Just follow the link in our bio and enter the code 'CHEESEWHEEL4FREE' when purchasing either a Small or Large Cheese Wheel Selection. Make sure you opt for the selection without a book, or you'll end up with two!

Say hello to Bergkäse!

Introduced to us by our excellent collaborators of all things Swiss - Huguenin Fromages - we are newly enthused by a cheese called Bergkäse.

You may have seen one of this name briefly on our counters earlier this year. We liked it a lot, but this new edition is a different producer & altogether different profile of age & flavour which has knocked our socks off.

Follow the link in our bio to our latest blog post, it details the efforts of the team behind the cheese at Fromagerie de Montagne de Gais.

Our shelves are filling up! We welcomed over 400kg of Raw Milk Somerset Cheddar onto our shelves today

Our History

In the 1950s Hubert Mons worked as a delivery driver and trucked food across the whole of France. With the knowledge accrued from such travel and an eye for farms worth stopping off at for lunch, Hubert decided to go into business for himself. In the early 60s he began to source artisanal cheeses from his native region of Auvergne and with his wife, sold them at local markets.

Shortly thereafter, Hubert realised that ‘affinage de camion’ (van maturing) was not viable and having moved over the border from Auvergne to St Haon-le-Chatel on the Cote Roannaise, they constructed their first purpose built maturing room which was insulated by two metres of earth. As success in their maturing rooms blossomed, they went on to occupy a shop in Roanne and called it ‘L’Auvergnat’. As the shop continued to flourish they expanded their maturing rooms and were also able to begin a wholesale operation.

In the 1980s, Hubert's two sons Laurent and Herve joined the family business. Laurent took over the family shop and Herve oversaw the cheese ripening, adding another large maturing room to the premises which was designed to keep slow ripening, cooked recipe mountain cheeses. In 2007, an opportunity to expand into a disused railway tunnel in nearby Ambierle presented itself. Experiments began to test its potential for maturing tommes and other un-cooked, hard cheeses like Salers, Cantal and Laguiole. The results were successful and in 2010 the tunnel was fully converted and put to use.

The British arm of Mons cheeses began business in 2006. We import traditionally made cheeses from France & Switzerland, ripened in the cellars at St Haon le Chatel. From our base in Voyager Business Park, Bermondsey, we store, mature, wholesale and, on Saturdays, retail our cheeses. We also have permanent shops in Lordship Lane, East Dulwich and Borough Market, along with a Saturday pitch at Brockley Food Market.
