Thank you to all of the seafarers serving on international merchant ships in physically and mentally demanding roles who keep us supplied 365 days a year.

So much of our lives are facilitated by your sacrifices and dedication.

Today and everyday let’s celebrate you and work to improve conditions both on and off shore.

23/06/2022

We’re at today with highlighting current and future career opportunities within the sector.

Such an excellent event and great to connect with the people who are making things happen.

Celebrating by recognising and raising awareness of some key facts.

Starting with this major one.

Who else was taught that most of Earth's oxygen came from trees, and in particular rainforests?

A quick google search showed that the emphasis and imagery is still mainly focused on this idea.

In fact, around 70% comes from marine plants 🌊 and 28% from trees 🌳

Our Ocean is being disproportionately affected by climate change.

Raising awareness of our Ocean and its role in giving and enabling our daily lives is an amazing opportunity. is one way to do this.

And while we're here 👇

🌍 70% of Earth is water, 97% is Ocean 🌊

🐠 The majority of life on Earth is aquatic, with many more yet to be discovered

🛰 Only about 20% of the global seafloor had been mapped with modern high-resolution technology

⌛️ The ocean contains more ancient artifacts than any museums

💡 Last year, the ’s’ was dropped from World Ocean(s) Day to emphasise our connectedness on this blue planet and to encourage collective action.

In celebration of Her Majesty The Queen's Platinum Jubilee, every vessel in every UK 🇬🇧 harbour is invited to sound its horn or whistle in one long blast at 12pm on Saturday 4th June.

If you’re heading down to a port, the coast or an inland waterway, don’t forget to capture this unique moment and tag us in your posts. We want to show everyone how the sector celebrates inland, on shore and at sea 📣🌊

Always an absolute hive of activity, 365 days a year and today was no exception with the cruise ship ‘The Spirit of Discovery’ being restocked, bunkering (refuelling) being undertaken by the Whitonia and the cargo ship Bjorg just underway after a brief stop in port.

Have you considered a career in the maritime sector? It’s one the best kept secrets within the UK directly supporting over 225,000 jobs and full of many different opportunists, not all based at sea.

Applications open - closing date 31/1/22

An exciting opportunity to undertake a 3-year doctoral research program with Yonder Cloud Limited and the University of Liverpool - Port City Innovation Hub is open to applicants.

The project aims to lead the development of high-performance computing technology and is looking to create the next generation of AI computing techniques for application in the Maritime Industry.

As part of the project, using computer vision and machine learning, the successful candidate will be responsible for developing algorithms that can be used to elucidate and better understand features of petabytes of data. These findings will be used to improve the locations of wind turbines, pinpoint the location of undersea cables and create opportunities for a wide range of further applications within marine/maritime.

As this is a computing-based PhD the team is looking for a student with a good knowledge of programming, who is willing to learn and will not be afraid to push the boundaries.

There is no specific need for a background in geography or coastal science.

To find out more about the role and for the application, details visit https://zcu.io/wzkm

Congratulations Theyr on the official launch of T-VOS today.

The development of T-VOS has been supported as part of the (SPace Research and Innovation Network for Technology) programme and brings together experts and resources from the team at Theyr ltd,  and

The project focused on combining real-time high-fidelity met-ocean data, provided by Theyr ltd, with a world-leading Genetic Algorithm, developed by Dr Adam Sobey and Dr Przemyslaw Grudniewski.

This new generation AI-driven Voyage Optimisation is, according to many industry experts, key to unlocking safety, reducing costs and critically - reducing GHG emissions for commercial vessels.

With the pressure increasing in the wake of COP26 to drive down GHG emissions across existing fleets it’s great to hear that the UK has been at the forefront of the development of step-change technology in this area.

Timeline photos 18/11/2021

Its been nearly a week since ended and while the media buzz surrounding the packed two weeks of events and announcements has subsided work to extract and understand commitments, declarations, and policies has begun in earnest.

It seems that, so far, COP26 has been widely regarded as a 'positive energy' for the maritime sector and extremely well represented by UK maritime bodies such as Maritime UK, Mersey Maritime , Department for Transport

The International Maritime Hub, a combined initiative between Maritime UK and City of Glasgow College worked well to increase the visibility of the UK Maritime Sector and highlight challenges and opportunities toward the Net Zero goal.

There also seems to be somewhat of a continued awakening to the importance of the sector, and in particular shipping as supporting global trade. Interest is, of course, building in the commercial opportunities which will be presented as a result of this focus on the reduction of GHG emissions and private sector funding to enable large-scale projects will be required. However, while regulation, policy, and people catch up it's worth remembering that we can't wait for a perfect solution to manifest, there is no 'silver bullet', and there are opportunities for progress that could be made today.

We've put together a quick roundup of the most notable announcements made over the course of the event and invite you to reach out should you like more information about current technology, research, data-centric approaches, AI, or simply just for a chat and we will be happy to connect you with the most appropriate people for your needs.

Cybersecurity needs to become a mindset, not just a response. 15/10/2021

‘To understand how to respond to cybersecurity threats we first need to agree on what this term means’ - Dr. Stavros Karamperidis.

As dependence on technology and data increases within the sector, the risk of cyberattack will inevitably continue to grow.

We spoke with Dr. Karamperidis, a leading expert in Maritime Cybersecurity, Lecturer in Maritime Economics, and Head of Maritime Transport Research Group at the University of Plymouth about the issues surrounding cybersecurity within the industry and his thoughts on managing cyber risk.

A positive message from our partners Virsec this around decarbonisation of the industry.

Some great work already underway utilising digital solutions to meet some of the objectives however it is the work of the people and the challenging of mindsets that will have the greatest impacts.

Thanks for your efforts team Virsec 👏🏻

This we want to highlight the positive steps the maritime industry is taking to decarbonise the sector.

The International Maritime Organization - IMO aims to reduce the shipping industry’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2050, and reduce the carbon intensity of emissions by 40% by 2030, and 70% by 2050 (compared to 2008 levels).

The decarbonisation strategy includes:

⭐ Cleaner fuels and vessels
⭐ Zero-carbon fuels and vessels by 2050
⭐ Co-ordinating industry commitments
⭐ New environmental policies and regulations
⭐ Investment in research and development
⭐ Supportive government action
⭐ Understanding societal shifts and consumer demands

This approach needs every aspect of shipping to get involved, and we're proud to be playing our part. We recently joined North West business leaders in maritime for the Mersey Maritime Ltd decarbonisation agenda, to discuss the region's innovation to support the strategy.
