James Warne comments on the in Building Design:
Profession reacts to Hammond’s budget Housing, planning and infrastructure announcements 'don't go far enough'
Once past the headlines of tax on plastic and commitment to electric cars, it’s a disappointing budget for those looking for progress on green initiatives.
Providing tax freezes for fossil fuels whilst low carbon technology has to wait until 2025 before the possibility of a helping hand sends a clear message. This principally sets out the Chancellors views on our current needs; cut costs today and let future generations fend for themselves.
Too little has been said on improving air quality, decarbonising the national grid, tax breaks for refurbishment, reducing waste energy either domestically or commercially and other initiatives that are much needed. Was our government not listening when they attended Bonn CP21 earlier this month?

Very pleased to read our contribution to the CIBSE Journal published today on Soft Landings and closing the performance gap. James Warne talks about focusing on key elements affecting the success of the project in the initial workshops, issues such as overheating or fire safety can be tackled by the whole team – not in silos, but holistically.

‘LUMA CONCEPT HOTEL’ OPENS IN WEST LONDON
LUMA Concept hotel London is inspired by the grand Osram lightbulb factory that once dominated this neighbourhood in Hammersmith; one of the earliest lamp factories in Britain. In the similar spirit of innovation and endeavour, LUMA Concept Hotel has been conceived, which opened its doors in May.
Heeton Holdings Ltd commissioned BOOM Collective to provide the engineering development and performance specification for Glenthorne Road Hotel, an 89 bed Hotel constructed utilising modular construction technology.
Heeton purchased the original buildings with planning permission dating back to 2010; on appointment BOOM Collective reviewed the original energy and sustainability strategy that included combined heat and power; photovoltaic arrays and air source heat pumps with little engineering validation or space planning. Consequently, BOOM Collective’s initial work involved the development of an alternative energy strategy that complied with the planning conditions in terms of carbon reduction; gave the Client best value and ‘fitted’ within the geometrical constraints of the planning permission.
The proposed energy strategy for the Hotel incorporates Air Source Heat Pumps to provide space heating, cooling and domestic hot water. The strategy achieves a 38.0 % improvement over Building Regulations 2013, complying with the London Plan Policy 5.2.
The project was designed with off-site modular construction in mind and in late 2015 Elements Europe Ltd won the contract to construct the Hotel. The project was ‘assembled’ onsite from factory produced modules within a challenging programme.
BOOM collective were also Assessors and ‘emergency’ commissioning managers assisting the construction team.

BOOM COLLECTIVE WINS KINGS CROSS SCHOOL COMPETITION
BOOM Collective, as part of a Curl La Tourelle Head Architecture led design team, have won a competition to design a new ‘Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics’ (STEM) facility at Argyle Primary School, located in the Bloomsbury Conservation area.
Argyle Primary School is a two-form entry community primary school, teaching in the region of 420 children from the ages of three to 11.
Improving STEM facilities will help to deliver the Camden Plan which aims to make Camden a place where everyone has a chance to succeed and a place that works for all. The project will look at utilising the existing unused first floor of the school annexe to provide a STEM classroom.
BOOM Collective will be working closely with the client and the design team to help realise the project’s objectives and ensure a comfortable environment, where natural ventilation and daylight aids learning. Boom Collective will be adopting a fabric first approach to the development of environmental engineering solutions to provide best value for the School and Camden.
