"The Literary Legend and Legacy of Jin Yong: Centennial Memorial Seminar" was held on 21 May 2024 at the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge, and concluded successfully. The four expert speakers included Dr James Lin (Senior Curator of Chinese Art at the Fitzwilliam Museum), Dr Jonathan Hui (Honorary Research Associate, Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, University of Cambridge), Mr William Fong (Curator of the "A Path to Glory - Jin Yong's Centennial Memorial" exhibition) and Ms Anna Holmwood (one of the translators of the English version of "Legends of the Condor Heroes"). [Additional: Another translator of the same book is Ms Gigi Chang.] We would like to thank them for their sharing and participation.
That morning, we were honoured to receive an expert tour from Dr James Lin. He gave us a detailed explanation of cultural relics and historical knowledge in the Chinese and East Asian exhibition areas. He mentioned the development of China's porcelain exports in the past, which has boomed and positively impacted porcelain-making technology in other countries. The audiences actively raised questions during the Q&A session, and Dr Lin patiently answered them one by one.
It is a great honour that this event is sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London and has received strong support from the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. The seminar started at 1:30 pm. Mr Gilford Law (the Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London) delivered a welcome speech via video. Professor Jonathan Liu (Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Ming-Ai (London) Institute) also presented the welcome speeches. He mentioned Jin Yong’s influence on overseas Chinese in his welcome speech: “Jin Yong is not only as a literary giant but as a cultural ambassador whose stories continue to inspire and unite the Chinese
diaspora across the world.” Ms Chungwen Li (Dean of the Ming-Ai (London) Institute) served as the host of the seminar. The first part of the seminar was conducted by Mr William Fong, who shared his curatorial concept for the exhibition. He said it is a good opportunity for the general public to gain a deeper understanding of the characters in Jin Yong’s works through Mr Ren Zhe’s sculptures and to enter his martial arts world. Dr James Lin shared his in-depth insights into Jin Yong’s Tomb Sect and related archaeological discoveries in ancient Chinese tombs. He appreciated that Jin Yong was knowledgeable and fully applied Chinese historical knowledge in his martial arts novels. For example, the novel mentions that taking elixirs can lead to immortality, which aligns with the Taoist pursuit of immortality at that time, and the cultural relics unearthed from ancient tombs confirm this, reflecting the historical background of Jin Yong's novels.
In the second part of the seminar, Ms Anna Holmwood mentioned the difficulty of being a translator and Chinese book publishing agent. Her sharing aroused the curiosity of the audience, and she also answered relevant questions attentively. Dr Jonathan Hui focused on Shakespeare's influence on Jin Yong: Othello and The Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. He cited the similarities between Shakespeare's Othello and Jin Yong's Qiao Feng, and his analysis of these two giants of Chinese and Western literature provided everyone with a new perspective. After the seminar, everyone enjoyed dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Cambridge. The guests said that attending a seminar on the centenary of Jin Yong’s birth made the event more meaningful. We would like to extend our thanks to the guests for coming all the way. As Professor Liu said, Jin Yong’s contribution lies in the cohesion of his works: “His works have been more than just stories; they have been bridges connecting us to our heritage, our values, and our identity.”

The 2024 Year of the Dragon celebration event, “When Guqin Meets Violin: Hong Kong Pop Music Concert (1950s - 2020s)”, organised by the Ming-Ai (London) Institute, was successfully held on 7th March 2024 (Thursday) at the St Martin-in-the-Fields Hall. We extend our gratitude for the funding provided by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London Hong Kong in London, and the great support from the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the four musicians for their efforts, including Ms. Constance Hsieh, Dr. Jane Ling, Mr. Leonard Au-Yeung and Miss Jacqueline Chen.
Guqin was one of the four traditional arts, alongside calligraphy, painting, and an ancient form of chess, while the violin is acknowledged as the queen of Western musical instruments. The encounter of the guqin with the violin provided us with an opportunity to facilitate cultural exchange between Chinese and Western music, presenting the Hong Kong pop music from different eras. In addition to the guqin and violin, this concert also featured Chinese musical instruments such as dongxiao, guzheng, tanggu (Chinese drum), and bianzhong. Furthermore, the historical photos provided by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum were displayed alongside different songs, offering a rich and diverse audio-visual experience for the audiences. During the event, the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Cllr Patricia McAllister, praised the old photos of Hong Kong and expressed a particular appreciation for the work of the renowned photographer, Mr. Chan Chik.
Mr. Gilford Law, the Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London, and Professor Jonathan Liu, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Ming-Ai (London) Institute, presented the welcome speeches. Mr. Andy Kwok, Director of Trustees at Ming-Ai (London) Institute was the Master of Ceremony. Many guests attended the concert, including Cllr Patricia McAllister, the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Mr. Li Liyan, the Minister Counsellor for Cultural Affairs of the Chinese Embassy in the UK, and Ms. Amy Wong, the Deputy Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London. We would like to express our gratitude to Lee K*m Kee (Europe) Limited for providing meal sponsorship, as well as sauces for our tasting session, and for assisting in our tasting session. Sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami are the five taste elements. We divided the sauces into six pairings for the volunteers to taste, but they were not aware of each sauce in advance. The sweet combination consisted of Sweet Soy sauce and Hoisin sauce; the salty one included Premium Light Soy Sauce and Premium Dark Soy Sauce; the bitter taste was represented by Angostura aromatic bitters; the sour flavour consisted of Seasoned Rice Vinegar and Mature Vinegar; the umami flavour comprised of Lee K*m Kee Premium Oyster Sauce and Panda Oyster Sauce; and the spicy sauces were Hot Chilli Soy Sauce and Chui Chow Chilli Oil.
On that day, many volunteers found the tasting session intriguing. For example, they felt that Premium Light Soy Sauce evoked more memories and food association, which may be attributed to the fact that Premium Light Soy Sauce is used to elevate the flavour in dishes, while Premium Dark Soy Sauce is used to add colour. In addition, when comparing two types of oyster sauce, most volunteers thought that Lee K*m Kee Premium Oyster Sauce provided a more prominent umami taste. After tasting Seasoned Rice Vinegar and Mature Vinegar, some volunteers also favoured the former, associating it with foods like dumplings.
We will have two project training workshops for volunteers on "Behind the scene: film and images collection" and "Unlock the hidden secrets of the British Chinese community" at the London Metropolitan Archives. Please stay tuned with us for future updates.
