⚛ The Indian government has announced plans to partner with the private sector to develop small modular reactors in a 2024-25 budget announcement which recognizes a significant role for nuclear in the country's future energy mix.

World Nuclear Association's Shah-Nawaz Ahmad - Senior Advisor for India, Middle East and South-East Asia, reflects on the announcement:

“India, the world’s most populous country, needs to balance its need for more electricity and growth with its environmental & Net Zero commitments. India has stayed the course through wider application of renewables and nuclear.

Specifically, India’s commitment to nuclear power development remains strong; building large nuclear power plants (NPPs) and pursuing policies that facilitate development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and their early introduction. Enhanced private sector participation in this sector is planned to help achieve these goals, which is reflected in the recent Union budget."

"World Nuclear Association congratulates the US government on the passage of the ADVANCE Act, a great example of the leadership that is needed to achieve the tripling of global nuclear capacity by 2050. The essential need for an explicit mandate and the required human and financial resources for national regulators to streamline licensing and regulatory processes, increase international coordination and assist newcomer countries in developing regulatory competency has long been advocated by the Association, through our CORDEL Working Group.

This is a most welcome step forward, and we look forward to more governments around the world undertaking similarly bold initiatives to accelerate their readiness for the expansion of nuclear power, thus unlocking the decarbonization and energy security benefits that only nuclear energy can provide."

from Director General, Sama Bilbao y Leon.

⚛ Nuclear power provides a reliable supply of low-carbon electricity, and it is widely recognized that its role will need to grow to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to mitigate climate change. Not only has it been demonstrated to have the lowest carbon and accident impacts compared to any other energy technology, but it also provides a major economic and employment boost while fulfilling key United Nations's Sustainable Development Goals. 🌍 ⚛
