🏗️Earlier in the year we installed a concrete sleeve/tube in large trench below the bridge. Now we’re working on the pipework, including welding, that will be inserted into it, before it’s connected into the network.
👷♂️The work is being done on the eastern side, by Frideswide Square, with other work continuing on the other utility trenches which will be used over coming weeks.

👷♂️We’ve finished our work to divert the walkway outside Westgate Hotel.
🏗️The diversion is required as we need to work on walkway to divert utility services.
🚧Please be aware if you are travelling through the area. In particular cyclists should take extra caution when approaching the entrance area from Botley Road.
👷♂️Throughout the weekend our teams were working on the Botley Road utility diversion work.
🏗️On the eastern side they were working on box 4 to take the gas main. Then on the western side they were working on box 1 to prepare for the new water main.
🌧️Ongoing rainfall continues to make working conditions tricky, especially when working down in the trenches.

👷♂️Latest on work at the Botley Road site in preparation for installation of new water main
🏗️Demolition of nursery building around 70% complete
Due to an upcoming bank holiday, a Sunday service will operate on all Oxford Bus Company services on 27th May 2024.
https://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/may-bank-holiday-services
🚰Our work on Botley Road is currently focused on diverting the water main.
🏗️Having previously installed the sleeve/tube under the road to hold the main central section of the pipe, we’re now working on the end sections where it will connect to the existing water network - outside Westgate Hotel and on junction of Becket Street (see blue blocks in diagram.)
🚌Due to limited space and need to keep walkway open, as well as allowing buses to keep using the turning area, we’re having to sequence the work in stages.
🛠️There are 9 sections to complete in total - 5 on western side and 4 on the east (see diagram to see layout). After grout was injected into the ground to help form waterproof barrier for working below water table, we’re now drilling holes to install piles to support the trenches while we dig.
👷♂️We’re working 24/7 to get the work done as quickly as possible. Sorry for this further inconvenience and disruption, but we’re at a critical stage of this complex piece of work.
We have been forced to close Tumbling Bay due to concerns over the condition of the wall and safety to users of the site.
A closure will remain in place over the summer.
We are currently working on a solution to address this. We ask the public not to attempt to enter the site at this time.
🚌The Botley Road Flyer will not be running on Monday because of the Bank Holiday.
🚌Instead it will run on Tuesday and then again on Friday.
🏗️Demolition of the nursery building on Roger Dudman Way is progressing. Please be aware if you’re passing the site.
🚉It’s to make space for the work we need to do on Sheepwash bridge, which includes putting in track for new platform.
🚂A reader of our newsletter, David.B, contacted us to highlight the previous history of the site. When the station was first built in 1800s, an engine shed was located there as part of the sidings (see excerpt from Oxfordshire History Centre map).
In the 1950s, the size of the sidings was reduced and an access road built along the western side of the station. David.B remembers when he worked on railway, there was a building there where he clocked in and out.
👷♂️We’re working on changing the entrance area to walkway, including putting in new ramp.
🛠️This is to make space for finishing our work installing connection pipes for new water main at both ends of the Botley Road site.
🚌We’ve also been working in the bus turning area to remove the raised section. They are going to be laying tarmac tonight.
