Pablo Picasso ‘A Painter’s Studio Should be a Laboratory’ Spanning half a century, the works in this exhibition epitomise the diversity of subjects, styles and genres that Picasso mastered and made his own, from portraits and unilinear drawings to collages, cut-outs and ceramics, using methods he invented or helped originate Exhibition: 1 December 2023 - 3 February 2024 The gallery will be closed from 23 December 2023 - 3 January 2024 For more information about the exhibition, email [email protected] #PaulStolperGallery #PabloPicasso #Picasso #painter #studio

La Californie, Cannes 1959.’ Photo Edward Quinn, © edwardquinn.com / © Succession Picasso / 2020, ProLitteris, Zurich. Picasso’s ‘Tête de Taureau’ of 1958, must have intrigued Picasso for a long time, leaning against the wall and resting against the back of the couch for almost a year between 1958 – 1959 in the drawing room at his house La Californie. In front of it and laying on the couch was an amphora, a gift from oceanologist Jaques-Yves- Cousteau. Surrounding ‘Tête de Taureau’ were many paintings including ‘Intérieur avec Femme dans un Rocking-Chair’ 1956, ‘Nature Morte au Compotier’ 1956, and a Bullfight painting by Claude Picasso, dedicated “Pour Mon Papa Cherie Claude”. The large cardboard maquette, measuring 82.8cm x 76.2cm was probably used by Picasso for his wood sculpture ‘Bull’ from 1958. The shape of the cut-out mimics the contour of a black crayon drawing of the bull’s head, still visible around the edge. He kept both the maquette and the sculpture for the rest of life; the cut-out was inherited by his grand-daughter Marina, whilst Picasso’s wife Jaqueline donated the sculpture to MOMA in 1983. ‘’The Bull’, Picasso’s extraordinary construction in plywood and various other materials which until very recently was unknown to Picasso scholars, has been given to the Museum of Modern Art by Jaqueline Picasso, widow of the artist, it was announced. The Bull (1958, 46 1/8” x 56 ¾” x 4 1/8”) has never been exhibited nor has it ever been reproduced in any of the voluminous Picasso literature. “I was amazed when I saw this piece among the objects in Jaqueline’s share of the estate, and I thought it absolutely extraordinary,” said William Rubin, Director of Pa
