Juristische Bibliothek im Rathaus der Stadt München, or Munich's Municipal Law Library, seems as if it's straight out of a fairytale. Founded in 1843 and later moved in 1906, the library has a delicate vine motif trailing up the gold-plated spiral staircase's railings as well as in the light fixtures that adorn the walls. ❤

Brilliant!
Tonight is the Persian ‘Shabe Yalda’ typically marking the longest night of the year. Celebrated for over thousands of years, families and friends gather to eat pomegranates, read poetry and stay up late together sharing stories. The tradition symbolizes light’s triumph over darkness. May those in Iran fighting for freedom feel the light and hope from all of us at MEI.
Happy ! A candle is lit each evening to celebrate the Jewish festival of lights. Other customs include eating doughnuts, giving gifts and playing a traditional spinning top game.

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without a jolly'ol sing-song.
It’s the winter solstice in the pagan calendar and one of the oldest winter celebrations in the world.
As the sun rises on the shortest day and longest night, it’s time to let the light back in and banish shade.

Today marks Finland’s 105 years of Independence🇫🇮
In Jonathan Clements’ enthralling history of Finland we move from the martyrdom of Saint Henry and the Vikings to Finland’s battle with Covid-19 and it’s application to join NATO.
A concise but highly entertaining book, ‘A Short History of Finland’ is a perfect introduction and a fascinating portrait of the nation.

‘Chaucer never wrote an autobiography. We do not know if the Chaucer who narrates the Canterbury Tales - portly, self-effacing, ironic, slightly detached, and sometimes naive or not very bright - is how Chaucer saw himself, how he wanted to be seen, or how he was really seen … But the real Chaucer was a man of enormous diplomatic and business experience - canny, witty, and clearly very, very sharp.’

Richard Owen’s account of Chaucer’s years in Italy begins in London, where the poet dealt with Italian merchants in his roles as court diplomat and customs official, before tracing his journeys in Rheims, Milan, Genoa, Florence, as well as Arezzo, Padua, Certaldo, Arqua and Paris.
What we get is a portrait of a European-like Chaucer, greatly influenced by the Italian luminaries Petrarch and Boccaccio and the aristocratic circles in which he mixed.
An accessible and highly enjoyable book, ‘Chaucer’s Italy’ is a study on Chaucer, an insight into European and English medieval culture and history, and a wonderful work of travel writing.
