Alan Johnston, works from 1988 - 94 An exhibition of works by Scottish artist Alan Johnston, featuring three seminal works made between 1988 and 1994. All works were originally exhibited at the Tilton Gallery in NYC; this is the first time they are presented in the UK.

On view: Alongside our current online exhibition we are pleased to present a selection of works by Adam Barker-Mill, Stephan Baumkötter, Henrik Eiben, Mike Meiré, David Murphy, Ignacio Uriarte and Beat Zoderer at our Ledbury Mews Space, by appointment.

The emotive title ‘Green New Deal’ draws on the groundbreaking policy, offering a positive outlook and a forward-thinking framework for the future. In the same vain, this selection of works offers a comprehensive overview of contemporary art practice: the works in this showcase all incorporate a green colour palette.

Environmental themes inform many of the artist’s oeuvre, ranging from Florian Baudrexel’s conscious choice of materials to Mike Meiré’s thematic explorations to Adam Barker-Mill’s engagement with organic farming and soil regeneration. The presentation offers an overview of works that reimagine the qualities of one of the most prevalent non-primary colours. Indeed, green, whose spectrum ranges from jade to chartreuse, encapsulates memories, reflecting a collective longing for beauty and a pursuit of hope.

Meiré’s latest works reflect the evolving weather patterns and environmental phenomena attributed to climate change. This show will present works in a wide variety of mediums, including new works on paper, a large-scale painted carpet, ceramic sculptures, and a cast metal sculpture.
His works on paper now incorporate a third process, building upon the initial newspaper grids and monoprints seen in previous exhibitions. Adding lacquer paint in bold circular shapes, Meiré creates a ‘constellation’ of forms superimposed over the original linear composition.

Meiré is a multidisciplinary artist, often using everyday objects as the starting point of his works. His unique ability to transform ubiquitous objects into visually engaging works enables us to reevaluate the ‘mundane’.
The title piece of the show, ‘The Weather Report,’ is made using surplus carpet and oil paint. The arrangement of soft, undefined shapes containing repetitive patterns is inspired by the abundance of visual stimuli we process daily. Meiré also introduces ‘glitches’ and the ‘warm, fuzzy’ effects familiar in AI-generated images.

Meiré continues to work as a creative director, his influence spanning the Design and Fine Art fields. Working between two spaces, the ‘factory’ or office and studio allows for continual reflection and questioning of his practice; “what are the tools of the moment?”.

The short film explores the relationship between Nick Terry's watercolours and electron microscopy imagery produced by his father, a pioneering neuropathologist.

Following the presentation, the artist Nick Terry and gallery co-director Niklas von Bartha will discuss the latest body of watercolours, which will form the basis of a showcase organised by Bartha_contemporary in Basel at

Born out of an interest in the Avant-Garde, architecture and the aesthetic of the Machine Age, Florian Baudrexel‘s works, made of recyclable everyday materials, embrace a carefully orchestrated sense of motion and direction. The pieces exhibited at Bartha_contemporary were all constructed from cardboard, which has been a critical component of the German artist’s practice for many years and reflects his interest in ecologically sound materials.

A polygon relief will occupy the curved back wall of the space, responding to the gallery's unique architecture. Presented alongside a set of three midsized works of a rectangular format. Two smaller objects from the Cardbird series complement the installation.

Florian Baudrexel‘s wall reliefs converge to define instances of modulated space. Rather than rely on tested formal composition, each work evolves from an intuitive process, as element by element gets added and altered to create a densely textured composition; the artist continuously edits the overall appearance as the pieces find their form.

More recently, Baudrexel has embraced the use of colour, both incidental and intentionally applied. In the case of the Cardbirds, recycled cardboard packaging lends the work a broad palette and evokes a sense of the familiar. Larger works, constructed from virgin cardboard, are monochromatically coloured using spray paints.

Last Night we visited TRANSYLVANIA’S HIDDEN TREASURES Foundation in Basel to view their current exhibition of my father’s collection of Ceramics and Textiles from Siebenbürgen. The show continues until November 6th and also features a display by my dad’s friend .
The accompanying catalogue is phenomenal. A special thank you to the exceptionally generous Christiane Pohl and Raphael Sutter who hosted us last night and are the heart and soul of this extraordinary space.

Here an extract from the exhibition press release: The works in the show could generally be classified - like Dickinson’s envelop writings - as hybrid objects: half object, half poem. There is an emphasis on the compact form, and on material paraphernalia – the kind of litter that is slowly disappearing as we are directed towards digital versions of everything - diaries, calendars, (invite) cards… etc. Without engaging in nostalgia for these things, I hope the show offers a resistance to the kind of obsessive hygiene that can result from reducing incidences of scrunched-up paper or accidental juxtapositions of printed text - chance operations that reveal unconscious truths about language and subjectivity.

Reflecting on the exhibition "Singular Forms (Sometimes Repeated)", at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2004, which traced the origins of reductive aesthetics from 1950 onwards and showcased works from the museum's own collection; this exhibition highlights a vital aspect of the Schroth Collection: works with a focus on serial forms. The show highlights artists who have developed their practice through a recurring conceptual framework.

This installation shot shows the two beautiful works "Midnight Rambler" and "Easy Rider CJS" by Winston Roeth, consisting of pigment-in-tempera painted slates. Detail shots coming soon!
