🌳🐛 THE HAIRY CATERPILLARS THAT ARE AS HARMFUL TO US AS OUR PLANTS 🐛🌳

The Oak Processionary Moth (OPM) is a relatively recent scourge of the UK oak tree population. They live and feed almost exclusively on oak leaves and can strip a tree bare, leaving it weakened and more vulnerable to pests, diseases, and stress. But this pest does not stop at compromising the health of our oak trees – people and pets need to watch out as well.

Oak Processionary Moth caterpillars were given their name because you’ll often see them moving along oak tree branches or between trees on the ground in a nose to tail procession. They have a distinctive black stripe and are covered in long white hairs, which gives the impression that they are furry and this is part of the problem. Small children think they’re cute and want to pick them up to play with them, or pets get curious and think they’re food. But these fine hairs contain a defensive toxin, designed by nature to prevent predators eating them. Unfortunately, this toxin will affect anyone or anything that touches them or their nest and can cause itchy skin, rashes, and on occasion, a sore throat, breathing problems and eye issues...

The silver birch is a popular garden tree because its deep roots don’t often trouble structures around them, and its sparse canopy offers shade without blocking out too much sunlight. It’s a hardy tree, easily able to handle the UK climate, even in its extremes and it provides the perfect conditions for many grasses, and flowers to grow near and around it.

The silver birch is also a wonderful boost to your garden’s biodiversity, as over three hundred insect species will happily call this tree home. The caterpillars of many species of moth munch away on the tree’s leaves and they in turn are food for the woodpeckers that nest within the tree’s trunk.

The tree’s deep roots draw vital nutrients up from the soil and release them back for other plants and trees around it to benefit from when its leaves fall in the autumn...

The Romans and Greeks associated the oak with their gods, and Norse mythology claimed the tree was sacred to Thor, the thunder god, not surprising as the oak has a reputation for being the most lightning struck tree in the forest (mainly because it’s often the tallest tree in the forest), and for not only surviving this, but thriving afterwards.

The ancient Celts considered the oak to be a symbol of strength and wisdom and over the centuries, religious ritual and king’s crowns have been connected to this majestic tree. Today in England we simply love this tree for the shade it offers us on a warm summer’s day, the strength of its thick branches for tree houses and home-made swings, and for the steadfast permanence of its presence throughout our lives as each oak can live for more than 200 years.

We see these trees a lot as North London tree surgeons. If you have a mature oak in your garden then you're truly lucky...
