Feeling overwhelmed? Too busy to function? Take a break on purpose. Taking a mini break during the day gives you time to reset and re-centre. When you do this, you are more likely to make conscious choices about your work and your activities that are productive, creative, and compassionate. And the great thing is it hardly takes any time at all. A break can be as simple as pausing for a few moments. My favourite way is to pause and focus on my breath. The Winter Solstice is on Wednesday 21 December 2022. It marks the first day of astronomical winter. The precise time of the solstice in 2022 is 9:47pm GMT. This differs from meteorological winter, which always begins on 1 December, every year. During the Winter Solstice, the northern hemisphere is tilted furthest away from the Sun, causing it to reach its lowest point visually in the sky. This means it takes the least amount of time to cross the sky, so we get the shortest day (and longest night) of the year. (In the Southern Hemisphere it’s the reverse and they celebrate the Summer Solstice). After the Winter Solstice, the days begin to get longer and the nights shorter. From now on the days will lengthen and warmth will come again. This is a rebirth, not a beginning, but a spiral in which the starting point of the next cycle is part of the vibrant whole. Winter brings the hardships of cold and shortness of daylight. On the outside very little growth is happening, but deep within the Earth, roots are still growing. All of nature has slowed down. This is a time for us to slow down and of course celebrate that the sun will return. I always miss the sun this time of year and make every effort to be outside in daylight, even if it's only for a few minutes. Bella, my dog, has been loving the extra walks she has been getting in the middle of the day as we make the most of the sunlight. It always feels strange to me that we have the shortest day today, yet it seems to get darker over the next week or two. Of course, it makes sense when you remember that our planet Earth's axis is titled, and although technically the shortest day is on the 21 December, because of the tilt the sun carries on rising later each day. Finally on 5 January the sun rises a whole minute earlier at 8:06am! And as the mornings and evenings start to pull out it does feel that the sun really is returning. When I'm working with clients they tend to do one of two things: they either worry about something that happened in the past. The past has happened and you can't change it. Or they worry about what might happen. Of course, the future hasn't happened yet and you don't know what will happen. The only thing that you control is what happens right now, in the present. Can you imagine how cluttered your home would be if you never threw anything away? When you put something in the bin, you just know what needs to be thrown away, and you bin it. You can tell the difference between important stuff and junk. Your brain automatically tells you that’s “rubbish” and you throw that thing away. When you have a thought such as "I feel stressed" or "I am going to fail", the first step to regaining control is to recognise that it’s a junk thought and throw it away. Imagine, sense, feel, or pretend to pull that thought out of your mind and throw it in the bin. The next step is to immediately replace it with a different thought such as "I can do this".
