It has been brought to my attention that an interview was aired on bbc news this morning and comments were made regarding the safety of gel polishes.

Firstly I would like to reassure my clients that you are in safe hands with me and my products. Secondly, professional nail techs such as myself actually welcome the issue of allergic reactions being mentioned in interviews such as this as it highlights the dangers of using at home products. They can have higher HEMA levels and if they aren’t used properly (ie getting them on the skin) and undercured they can very easily cause allergic reactions. I have seen this for myself especially during lockdown.

Why do scientific UV experts believe that UV nail lamps do NOT cause skin cancer? Their in-depth research concluded that all UV nail lamps, including those that use LED’s were safe!

One reason is, according to these PhD scientists- world-renown photobiologists studying the effects of UV on humans, “The dorsum of the hand is naturally the most UV acclimatized, photo adapted, UV-resistant body site. To produce similar sunburn, the back of the hand requires about four times more UV exposure than the cheeks, chest or abdomen and about double the exposure to the dorsal arm or ventral forearm.”

There is no credible evidence that the low levels of UV exposure from twice per month nail services present any risk of causing skin cancer. The facts below explain why all UV nail lamps, include those that use LED’s are safe when used as directed.
1. Dr. Robert Sayre, independent scientific expert on the effects of UV on the skin has stated that the UV exposure risks from UV nail lamps are “trivial”.
2. The back of the hand is the MOST UV resistant part of the body.
3. Clients are exposed to far more UV than from natural sunlight exposure.
4. Studies show that UV nail lamps are at least 11 times safer than exposure to overhead sunlight.
5. Exposures are far below internationally accepted standards for daily workplace exposure to UV.
6. Fifteen minutes of exposure EVERY day to a nail lamp would not exceed internationally accepted workplace standards for daily UV exposure.
7. Typical exposure produces 1/30th of the UV needed to redden the hands.
8. Medical UV psoriasis treatment skin exposure is equal to 250 years of weekly usage of nail lamps.
9. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says… the FDA views nail curing lamps as low risk when used as directed by the label. To date, the FDA has not received any reports of burns or skin cancer attributable to the lamps.
10. Any small risk can be further reduced by wearing SPF sun protection lotions or covering the back of the hand with a cloth.

D Day is almost here!! It’s been so long!
