Cakes by Yolk

The cake that made me re-think coming out of retirement!
This was Frances' 2nd birthday cake. She was really into tea parties, so I wanted to make her something that was recognisable to a 2 year old. I had such fun thinking about what to make. She told me it had to be pink, which was and still is her favourite colour. I'm not a pink person myself, so it can't be too pink, always paired with other colours.
I think it was this cake that planted the seed in my brain that has led to the comeback of Yolk.
I'll tell you now, the. Cake she wants for her 4th birthday is quite an elaborate scene of witches and fairies that quite frankly sounds more bonkers each time she describes it to me. May not make it to the gram..!

What a wet and miserable day out there. I have to say, I feel like I'm running out of steam already. My house is a tip, I have a very long to-do list, there are about five piles of laundry to be sorted and let's not even start on Christmas presents or even what is for dinner tonight!
Im going to tick a few things off the list and then settle myself in front of the tv!
Keep those batteries charged folks. It's a busy, stressful time of year!

Day four of and today is all about clients.

I have to say, I have the best clients! When I announced yolk was coming back, I had so many messages from previous brides and clients simply saying they were happy for me or that they missed my cakes, it was so lovely!

I mentioned last night that sometimes couples come to me for birthday cakes for their new additions to the family. My first testimonial is from the lovely Lauren, whose little boy is turning 1 and getting a cake next week!

I love love love getting these amazing cards and feedback. It is so great to know that all your hard work is appreciated. It's the best!

Brand story

I'm joining in on day 2 of started by and today it's all about the brand story.

First photo: Yolk was started in 2014 in my little kitchen in Stoke Newington in North London. I was working as a chef in a busy cafe in Dalston and realised that what I most loved doing was making cakes. I started taking orders and then decided to go solo and start a business.

So, I needed a name. I wanted something simple and clean. I knew I didn't want anything too twee or girly, as that's just not me. I was thinking about ingredients and the elements of a cake, and then the name came to me in the bath one day!

Second photo: The OG logo was designed by my sister. Behind the scenes, Yolk is currently having a rebrand. It is looking so great, I can't wait to show it to you!

Lasy photo: When I moved back to Macclesfield, I had a beautiful studio on Chester Road. It was so lovely and everything I had wanted in a workspace. I have been looking for a new space and have found a great one. So, fingers crossed, in January, I will be able to show you my new place! It is in Macclesfield, a ten minute walk from home and will be such a lovely place to work. I'm very excited!

I was born and raised in Macclesfield, and even though I never thought I would be living a few streets from the house I grew up in, I love Macclesfield. It's got so much going on an such a nice vibe to it. I'm proud to be a Macclesfield business!

A little (re)-introduction and some facts about me so we can get to know each other!

I lived in london for nearly 10 years. My (now) husband, Tom, and I met at uni there, and we just kind of stayed. Yolk was actually born in London, where I ran it from our very cute little mews house in Stoke Newington. I now live about 3 streets away from where I grew up in Macclesfield.

I studied Russian and Film studies at UCL. A lifetime ago, my Russian was pretty good. Now, its only use is understanding some of what the baddies in films are saying without the subtitles.

I am a mum to Frances who is a little force of nature. She is going to be 4 in February, but it feels like she's going to be 14 with the amount of sass she serves. My auntie says, "You can't raise tame ones from wild ones" and I suppose she is right! Just as stubborn and determined as I am.

I love DIY, and I am actually really good at it! My proudest DIY achievement would probably be replacing broken floorboards. I ripped up the 40 year old carpets to discover beautiful original floorboards. I ripped out the broken ones, found matching boards and replaced them. Or dabbling in plastering. Smoothing cakes is good practice I guess.

My ideal day would be a lie-in. 7:30 would be a start. No, if its an ideal day, let's go wild and say 8. Then breakfast out somewhere. Always French toast if it's on the menu, never a savoury brekkie. It will be a nice crisp, autumnal, sunny day, so a walk somewhere to get some fresh air. Then a smooth bedtime and why not, a take-away for tea. Who can be bothered to cook. Not me. Or maybe Tom makes tea, he's an excellent cook! Followed by some wine and some good TV. I am easily pleased.

Happy Friday! It is a truly wet, grim and grey day, so thought it would be nice to remember sunnier times! Throwback to this stunning timeless set up. Elegant, clean and sophisticated. This could be recreated in so many different venues.
The wedding cake was quite simple with a textured buttercream and a touch of gold leaf decorated with matching florals.

The one time I stood a good chance to have a piece of wedding cake and by the time I returned to my chair, my piece had been eaten! This was my sisters wedding that i mentioned on my story last night. I wanted to share these

It was the most beautiful winter day with the most beautiful golden light. Four tiers of cake, and I didn't get a single slice.

- Where have I been?
It's been a while! That little baby in the previous post will be going to school next year, so yeah, been a while. I've been busy, being a mum, re-decorating our house, spent a year freelancing as a florist and now I'm back baking.

- Why am I back?
Well, I've missed Yolk. I didn't think I would come back, I thought that's it, I'll leave on a high. But, there was always a thought that maybe there was unfinished business and more to come. I've missed thinking constantly about cakes and designing and decorating them. Having ideas buzzing around my head. The excitement when an order comes though.

- So, whats next for Yolk?
Freelancing as a florist at weddings has given me the thrill of being part of people's big day, but I miss working with a couple from start to finish and bringing it all together after months of planning. So, I will be taking on lots of wedding cakes (🤞), dressing them with beautiful flowers. Making a capsule collection of celebration cakes which I'll launch toward the end of the year.

So, yeah, keep your eyes peeled!
